Dugout Digest – that awkward moment…

Having to throw a position player on the mound has to be one of the worst feelings for a manager. Having to do it against your rival probably hurts even more. But that’s what John Farrell had to do on Thursday night as the Red Sox were getting smashed by the Yankees – he threw […]

The best defensive plays for the week ending April 23rd

This week’s list of defense lacks some of the usual names we see on here – there’s no Trout, Simmons, or Tulowitzki, but that doesn’t mean that the plays won’t stand up to some of the best that those guys have made. April 17th, Yankees vs Rays – triple your pleasure. The legend of Yangervis […]

Down on the farm: Pacific Coast League April Edition

Early in the season, there’s always an explosion of promotions and roster jockeying among teams, so it’s difficult to generate a list of players who we as a site are excited about following.  The most notable of these promotions was Jon Singleton, who was absolutely murdering baseballs in AAA and thus will not be featured […]

Yesterday was Wei-Chung Wang Wednesday for the Brewers

Milwaukee Brewers rookie pitcher Wei-Chung Wang is a big hit in the locker room, even if he’s not getting used too often in games. The Brewers are so enamored with Wang that they deemed this past Wednesday “Wei-Chung Wang Wednesday” or #WCWW, a takeoff of the popular “Woman Crush Wednesday” (or #WCW) hashtag every Wednesday on Twitter.

Things get worse for D’Backs, Mark Trumbo out with stress fracture

The Arizona Diamondbacks have the worst record in the majors and just can’t seem to catch a break. They can, however, catch a fracture. To be precise, they’ve now lost slugger Mark Trumbo for an indefinite period of time to a stress fracture in his left foot: There is no timetable for Trumbo’s return yet, […]

Dugout Digest – untouchable

Texas Rangers starter Martin Perez is on one hell of a run lately. Well, maybe run isn’t the right word, because Perez hasn’t allowed any in his last three starts. He’s spun 26 straight scoreless innings, and has fired back to back complete game shutouts – including yesterday against the Athletics. He’s not striking many […]

Michael Pineda ejected from Yankees-Red Sox game for pine tar on neck

Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda was ejected from Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park for having pine tar on his neck. The incident occurred in the second inning after Boston manager John Farrell asked umpires to check Pineda for a foreign substance. Home plate umpire Gerry Davis noticed a smear on the right […]

Josh Johnson needs a second Tommy John surgery

Signing pitcher Josh Johnson to a one-year, $8 million contract was viewed as a savvy offseason move for the Padres. If the right-hander stayed healthy, San Diego could have an ace-caliber starter for about one-third the price of what a No. 1 starter typically costs on the open market nowadays. Unfortunately, Johnson won’t have thrown […]

Albert Pujols joins the 500 home run club. Do we care?

Albert Pujols got a fastball right down Broadway on Tuesday night and did to it what he and most major leaguers do to those, he hit it a long way.  It was his second home run of the game and the 500th of his illustrious career.  Pujols is the 26th player in baseball history to […]

The best moments in the history of Wrigley Field

In honor of Wrigley Field’s 100th birthday on Wednesday, MLB Tonight put together this video discussing the best moments in the stadium’s history, featuring players like Ron Santo, Babe Ruth, Ryne Sandberg, Sammy Sosa, and Kerry Wood. It’s a pretty cool look at an important part of baseball history, and I think the most illuminating part of the video was the fact stated by Brian Kenny that during Wrigley’s 100 year lifespan, 20 different MLB parks have opened, been used, and have since been demolished. That’s just wild.

Dugout Digest – history

The Angels beat the Nationals 7-2 on Tuesday night. But really, that final score was secondary to what happened on the field – Albert Pujols hit home runs 499 and 500, becoming the third youngest player in MLB history to reach the benchmark and the first since Gary Sheffield back in 2009 with the Mets. […]

Albert Pujols joins the 500 home run club

April 22, 2014.

Taylor Jordan.

Nationals Park.

Those are the three major factors that will go down in history in relation to Albert Pujols becoming the 26th member of the 500 home run club. The fifth inning, two-run homer off of Jordan was given a standing ovation and a curtain call by the Nationals fanbase at Nationals Park. He’s the third-youngest player to reach that plateau, following Jimmie Fox and He Who Shall Not Be Named (Alex Rodriguez, of course).

Pujols is 21 homers away from entering the top 20 all-time in home runs, and it’s not a stretch to think he could get there this season with the way he’s been hitting.

Congratulations, Albert.
