The Arizona Diamondbacks have the worst record in the majors and just can’t seem to catch a break. They can, however, catch a fracture. To be precise, they’ve now lost slugger Mark Trumbo for an indefinite period of time to a stress fracture in his left foot:
Following the win, Gibby announced that MRI on Trumbo shows an apparent stress fracture in his left foot. Will seek second opinion at home

There is no timetable for Trumbo’s return yet, but he did suffer a stress fracture in his right foot at the end of the 2011 season and didn’t get fully healthy until right before the start of the next season. So, yeah, it could be awhile before the D’Backs get Trumbo back.
Of course, that may not be the worst thing in the world for them as Trumbo was off to a pretty rough start. He lead the National League with seven homers before the injury, but he paired that with a miserable .264 OBP and outfield defense so comically bad that he was already a negative-5 in Defensive Runs Saved, inspiring a running series of posts here at TOC. Even still, losing a player that was counted on to be a major offensive contributor is only going to make it that much harder for the Diamondbacks to extricate themselves from the basement and get to a point where they are at least respectable.
They’ll have to do that with Gerardo Parra and Cody Ross playing almost every day in the outfield now. They may not be any better than Trumbo, but they’ve at least got a lot of that great grittiness that Kevin Towers and Kirk Gibson have relied so heavily on. I’m sure that will start paying off any day now… yep, any day. Whether or not Gibson or Towers are still around to see that pay off or even to see Trumbo come back healthy is a different story altogether.
