Suspensions handed out for Brewers-Pirates brawl

Suspensions for Sunday’s Steel City skirmish already appealing, according to Fox’s Jon Morosi. That much was probably safe to assume, given Gomez’s comments immediately following the game on Sunday. Maldonado, who knew a suspension was coming, will not appeal and will start serving his suspension tonight against San Diego. The Maldonado suspension may end up […]

The most exciting walk offs of the week (April 22nd edition)

There were some wild walk off this week, from closer collapses to grand slams to awful defense. A little bit of everything, I guess. April 16th, Mariners vs Rangers – Rodney goes down. Texas was down 2-0 going into the bottom of the eighth after not being able to do anything against Felix Hernandez all […]

Has D-Backs owner put GM Kevin Towers on notice?

For the most part, it’s still too early in the 2014 MLB season to make any grand declarations. But after three weeks, we can safely say that the Diamondbacks have been the biggest disappointment in baseball. After Monday’s 5-1 loss to the Cubs, the D-Backs are now 5-17. They’ve lost nine of their past 10 […]

Chris Sale

Chris Sale lands on DL after throwing 127 pitches

Five days after throwing 127 pitches in 7 innings against Boston, Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale is on the disabled list. The White Sox announced Monday night that Sale would be scratched from his scheduled start today. Shortly after, they placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a strained flexor muscle in his […]

Dugout Digest – the battle of the dregs

Diamondbacks vs Cubs games are something that were drawn up by a very cruel individual, since both teams stink. The game was pretty typical of Arizona’s season – Bronson Arroyo allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings, which actually *lowered* his ERA to 9.50. The one Diamondbacks run came on a Mark Trumbo solo […]

Picking a battle over Bryce Harper’s lack of hustle

Demonstrations of authority like the one Nationals manager Matt Williams exerted on Saturday by benching Bryce Harper for not running out a groundball are why the team hired him. Williams was brought in to be a stricter disciplinarian — a hard-ass contrast to Davey Johnson, who was more of a players manager, content to let his […]

Ivan Nova appears headed for Tommy John surgery

If there’s good news about Ivan Nova’s pitching injury, it’s that the Yankees now know why he pitched so badly on Saturday. But the bad news is significant. Nova has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, which very likely means his 2014 season is over and the Yankees have a major […]

This week in replay reviews (April 21st edition)

Another week of replay, another week of endless controversy and discussion about the potentially broken replay system…ho hum. April 14th, Nationals vs Marlins – where’s the line? Something my father endlessly harps on is the lack of the yellow line at the top of the outfield wall in several newer stadiums. There’s not one at […]

Hank the Dog

Miller Park is installing a doghouse for Hank

Are you tired of Hank the Dog stories yet? No? Lucky you! The Brewers enter Monday with the best record in baseball, but who cares about their best start since 1987 when Hank is getting his own adorable little doghouse installed at Miller Park? His new digs while he’s in residence at the stadium will […]

Dugout Digest – the cycle that wasn’t

Ryan Howard nearly hit for the cycle on Sunday. Hell, he should have had it – needing just a double, he hit a ball that fell in front of Rockies right fielder Brandon Barnes and skipped past him, allowing Howard to reach second base. He had it! But the official scorekeeper called it a single […]

Brewers and Pirates continue to go at it in post-game comments

Carlos Gomez:

“I’m not apologizing for nothing I did today. I do the stuff I’ve been doing for eight years. Why do people get mad and pissed off for something I do every time? And when they do it nobody get mad, nobody get pissed off? I don’t understand.”

“(Jose) Tabata hit a double, pimped it, we don’t do nothing. (Andrew) McCutchen do it yesterday. Russell Martin did it. We didn’t do nothing. We respect that – ‘You win, OK, enjoy it.’ We hit a double, we hit a triple, they get mad. I don’t think it’s fair.”

“I get to third base and somebody’s screaming at me – ‘It’s not your job.’ But everything’s over and Snider comes real angry and talks to me that way, so I responded back, he tried to punch me and everything started there. I don’t know why they’re mad for something like that.”

“When they strike me out, I no say nothing. I walk to the dugout with my mouth shut and I don’t say nothing. They get hit, they’re screaming, I don’t think it’s fair. You want to do something? Strike me out and enjoy it. I’m not going to be pissed off for you to strike me out. I’ve struck out a lot of times and nothing’s happened.”

Gerrit Cole:

“I said, ‘If you’re going to hit a home run, you can watch it. If you’re going to hit a fly ball to center field, don’t watch it. I didn’t curse at him, I didn’t try to provoke a fight. I was frustrated and I let my emotions get the better of me and I ended up getting one of my teammates hurt.”

Martin Maldonado:

“I saw Snider and Martin over Gomez. I could tell it wasn’t fair, so I had to protect my teammate. I don’t worry about (a suspension). That’s part of baseball. Whatever happens.”

Russell Martin:

“The fair thing would be to have our team hold down Maldonado so that Travis can go back and sucker-punch him right in the face. That would be the fair thing to do. I don’t know if we ask the Brewers if they’re going to be down for that.”

Brewers, Pirates trade blows in Easter brawl

The Brewers and Pirates don’t like eachother. This is nothing new — the two sides have had their fair share of fights in the past. The latest incident came this afternoon, when Carlos Gomez stared at what he thought was a home run and flipped his bat for what ended up being a triple off the wall. Gerrit Cole took exception, and Gomez — who has a history of not taking pitcher confrontation well — started jawing back. The benches cleared in a hurry, with Travis Snider taking Gomez down before getting blasted with a closed fist from Martin Maldonado and getting taken down by Rickie Weeks. Gomez, Snider and Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron were ejected. Cole remained in the game.

Dugout Digest – same ol’ Astros

You know, Jeff Luhnow and company in Houston can talk all about “the plan” and their path towards success in the future…but let’s be honest here: the Houston Astros still aren’t a good baseball team. Houston had a 3-1 lead going into the ninth inning in Oakland on Saturday afternoon, and Chad Qualls had an […]
