This week in replay reviews (April 28th edition)

Another week of replay in the books, and another week of anger and rage behind us…well, until the next time we have a controversial replay call. On the bright side, the transfer rule is officially dead and buried, so we’re never going to need to hear about that again – hopefully. April 21st, Reds vs […]

Dugout Digest – some things never change

I could probably flesh this out into a longer column, but the Atlanta Braves pitching staff is back to being awesome with a new cast of characters. Atlanta’s 2.04 ERA through the first month of the season is the best in baseball by more than half a run. Of the 13 pitchers who have thrown […]

Chris Davis isn’t happy about hitting the DL with an oblique strain

“It’s kind of crazy, because I don’t feel terrible. I’ve never had anything like this before. I figured it would just be a few days and then we’d forget about it.”

“Its definitely disappointing, frustrating. I do a lot to try and take care of my body and prevent injuries. You play this game long enough, eventually you’re going to run into something like this, but I’m going to stay positive. I definitely have the best group of guys behind me and they picked me up tonight with a win and an exciting win. That was good to see. We’ve got more than our share of guys in here that are capable of picking me up and [helping] the team until get back.”

“As far as I know right now it’s 15-day DL. So, hopefully things will go well and I’ll be able to bounce back quickly.”

Matt Garza gives former Cubs teammate Jeff Samardzija some advice

“All I can tell him is keep pitching — pitch your way out of it. Keep your eyes focused, your eyes straight ahead and just pitch. There’s nothing else you can do.”

“I told [Samardzija], ‘It doesn’t matter, dude. You play in Chicago. I was there, and I lost 30 wins in three seasons. It’s not your fault. You pitch your way out of there.'”

Bryce Harper is heading to the disabled list

Washington Nationals star outfielder Bryce Harper is being placed on the disabled list with a sprained left thumb. Harper suffered the thumb injury on Friday night while sliding into third base on a triple. Believe it or not, this is only the second DL stint for Harper in his career. Despite the perception that Harper […]

Dugout Digest – fallen from grace

Right now, it’s not a very good time to be Trevor Cahill. The Diamondbacks moved Cahill from the rotation to the bullpen after his disastrous start on April 13th. At the time, his ERA sat at a ghastly 9.17. In the bullpen at first, Cahill rebounded, allowing just one hit over six scoreless innings while […]

Jean Segura leaves Cubs-Brewers game after being hit by bat

Here’s a very scary moment from Miller Park. Ryan Braun inadvertently clipped Brewers shortstop Jean Segura in the head with his bat while warming up in the first inning, causing Segura to leave the game after just one half inning. He was replaced at shortstop by Jeff Bianchi. Hopefully Segura is alright and will be in the lineup for Milwaukee tomorrow.

On Second Thought: Billy Hamilton, leadoff hitter?

There’s no questioning the excitement of Billy Hamilton. I mean, he did this, for crying out loud. In 22 games, he has 9 stolen bases in 12 attempts, and while it doesn’t touch his ridiculous number of 13 steals in 13 games from 2013, he has speed that can’t be touched at the Major League level. […]

Dugout Digest – back to the status quo

Good news, everyone. Well, everyone that isn’t an Astros fan – Houston is once again back to being the worst team in baseball. The Mariners have won two in a row to push themselves to a .409 winning percentage, the Diamondbacks have won three straight to get themselves up to .308, and the lowly Astros […]

MLB comes to its senses and changes transfer rule

It took about a month for MLB to figure out what constituted a catch under the expanded guidelines of instant replay this season. But executives, players and umpires have gotten together to stop a strict interpretation of the “transfer rule” that had made previously simple plays unnecessarily complex. As reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, […]

Down on the farm: Texas League April Edition

The Texas League normally plays neutral to pitcher friendly and in some ways serves as more of prospect showcase league than AAA.  Most of the top prospects in baseball tend to skip AAA on their way to the big leagues, so AA is more prone to seeing the 20 and 21-year-old future superstars. Keep in […]

The longest homers for the week ending April 24th

I have some bad news – there’s no Giancarlo Stanton homers featured this week. Also, there will be no Trumbombs featured for the foreseeable future after the Diamondbacks placed their slugger on the DL with a fractured foot. However, I also have some good news – there are some insane shots featured anyway. Enjoy! 1) […]

Robinson Cano and the Mariners are struggling and nobody seems to care

The Mariners shocked the baseball world this winter by ponying up $240 million to lure Robinson Cano away from the Yankees. In a perfect world, landing Cano would vault the Mariners into contender status, breathe some life into their perennially moribund offense and give Seattle instant credibility and notoriety. In a more realistic world, Cano’s […]

Miguel Montero defends Kevin Towers by blaming the team he put together

“First of all, I just want to say that I’ve been reading all the comments about Gibby and KT and I just would be very disappointed if something happened to them,” Montero said referring to either or both of them losing their jobs. “The bottom line is, it’s our responsibility to go out there and take care of business. I just wanted to say that, because the blame should be on us. It should be on the players, it should be on us, because we haven’t played the way we are supposed to play.”

[…]

“I read all the articles and we see what’s going on,” Montero said. “We’re smart, we know how the game goes, we know how the business goes and obviously I just feel bad. Because you know the bottom line, it’s our responsibility to come here and do our job and we haven’t been doing it. We can’t put the blame on them. Nobody can put the blame on them because they’ve been the guys that have been coming here working their butt off every day, day in and day out with the best attitude.”
