Bartolo Colon creamed a foul ball, and the Mets went nuts

History was made on Monday at Citizens Bank Park – Bartolo Colon made solid contact with a pitch. Sure it was a foul ball, but this thing went into the second deck! Curtis Granderson leaped up from his spot on the bench in excitement, but it was all for naught – Colon would end up striking out in the at bat. But what does this say about Phillies starter Roberto Hernandez, who had four balls fouled off by Colon during the at bat? When he can get around on your fastball, you might have a problem.

For the record, Colon is still hitless this season, and hasn’t tallied a hit since his Cy Young winning 2005 season with the Angels.

San Diego police officer refuses to give foul ball to fans

During Monday night’s Pirates-Padres game at Petco Park in San Diego, a police officer caught a foul ball (on a hop, mind you) off the bat of Russell Martin. The cop then proceeded to keep the ball for himself, instead of tossing it to one of the fans begging for the ball. If there was a kid around, I’d have more of an issue with this – there’s no reason to give away your ball to a teenager or young adult, dammit.

Dugout Digest – are the Pirates making a charge?

The Pittsburgh Pirates are putting together a little bit of a hot streak in the NL Central. They’ve won four out of five games, and are now tied for third in the division with the Cincinnati Reds, just two games behind the second-place St. Louis Cardinals. After a 10-16 March/April, the Pirates are 17-14 since, […]

Recapping the week ending June 1st in baseball

This week did a lot to tighten all of the races across baseball. Of the league’s six divisions, only the Giants have a lead of larger than 4.5 games. Consequently, no first place team has a lead smaller than three games. Breathing room was the name of the game this week. Most impressive team of […]

The Weekly Puig – third edition

Another week has gone by, and our boy Yasiel Puig killed it once again. We named him our best NL hitter of the month of May, but he’s also a stud in the field. Check out this catch from Thursday night against the Pirates. At heart, Puig is really just a child. MTV’s Fat Joe […]

The best and worst players of May 2014

May is in the books, and a lot of teams and players took gigantic steps forward. Unfortunately, some players and teams also took massive steps backward. Here’s a recap of the month. AL Hitter of the Month: Edwin Encarnacion. 16 homers in May for Encarnacion powered the him to a .281/.369/.763 line, and pushed the […]

Dugout Digest – the Phillies, the Mets, and marathons

The Phillies and Mets found themselves forced into playing a five-game series this weekend because of a rain out earlier in the season. Unfortunately for both teams, three of their first four games in the series have gone to extra innings, meaning that the teams have already played the equivalent of five games, with one […]

Dugout Digest – panic time for the Rays?

I know it’s only June 1st, but things do not look good for the Tampa Bay Rays. One year ago, the Rays were just in fourth place in the AL East, but were only three games behind the division-leading Red Sox and were 30-25. This year, the Rays are 3.5 games behind Boston…who is in […]

Cardinals top prospect Oscar Taveras’ first major league hit was a homer

During Saturday’s Giants-Cardinals contest at Busch Stadium, St. Louis’ top prospect Oscar Taveras made his major league debut. And in the fifth inning, Taveras stroked his first major league hit – a home run to right field off of Yusmeiro Petit. It’s likely the first of many of the soon-to-be 22 year old, who was recalled to the majors because first baseman Matt Adams was placed on the 15-day DL.

David Ortiz is ready for a war with David Price and the Rays

“It’s a war. It’s on. Next time I see him, he better put his gloves on. I have no respect for him anymore.

“I had a lot of respect for the guy, man. It is over now. I have no more respect for him. Last year, we kicked his butt in the playoffs and he went off talking crap about everyone.

“We go to talk on the phone after we kind of straightened things out. He was upset, and then I let him know how I felt. Later on he called me and apologized because he knew he was wrong. Everything was cool, so the first at-bat of the season against him, he drills me.

“I was surprised. You can’t be acting like a little girl out there. You aren’t going to win all of the time. When you give it up, that is an experience for the next time. If you are going to be acting like a little bitch every time you give it up and put your teammates in jeopardy, that is going to cost you.

“I was going to let him know. I respect everyone in this league and expect the same from everyone. If you are mad because I take you deep twice, let me let you know. I’ve got almost 500 home runs in this league. That’s part of the game, son.”

Dugout Digest – the night of four managers

On Friday night in Boston, something strange happened – four different men served as manager of the Boston Red Sox. Confused? Let me explain. First, it was John Farrell, the actual Red Sox manager. Farrell was ejected in the first inning for arguing after David Ortiz was hit by David Price and Price wasn’t ejected. […]

The longest homers for the week ending May 29th

The longest homers of the past week include a new entrant into our top five for the year, and a new player at the top of our list of overall appearances on the list – and there’s no chaff this week. Lots of homers were absolutely destroyed this week. 1. Paul Goldschmidt vs Troy Patton, […]

Each MLB team’s best first round pick of the last decade

We’re just days away from the 2014 MLB Draft, and diehard baseball fans and prospect gurus across the country are getting hyped up. For the casual fan that may be interested in the Draft, it’s worth noting that the MLB Draft is quite different from the NFL and NBA Drafts that you’re probably more used […]

Dugout Digest – the Angels are making things interesting

The Los Angeles Angels are living up to their hype this offseason, despite getting smashed with injuries. After their 7-5 win on Thursday over the Mariners, the Angels are just a game and a half behind the A’s. That’s shocking considering how much Oakland dominated the division in the early going of the season, but […]

The best defensive plays for the week ending May 28th

Another week of great defense is in the books, and this time around, home runs are just a little difficult to come by. May 22nd, Indians vs Orioles – David Lough’s robbery. Tie game, seventh inning…and David Lough took three runs away from the Indians with this slick grab. It’s not the sexiest play ever, […]
