Dugout Digest – rock bottom for the Phillies?

You know, I think most of us expected the Phillies to be pretty bad in 2014. But on the morning of June 6th, I don’t think any of us expected this – the only teams in baseball with a worse record than Philadelphia are the Cubs and Rays (which is a completely different topic, by […]

Does a great run differential guarantee a team anything?

Through 59 games, the Oakland Athletics have been a juggernaut. Their 37-22 record is one game behind the Giants for the best record in baseball, and is the best in the American League by a game and a half over the Blue Jays. Where the A’s are really shining though, is their run differential. At […]

The best defensive plays for the week ending June 4th

There actually didn’t seem to be a lot of outstanding defense from this week – but here’s the best of what we have. May 30th, Pirates vs Dodgers – Dee Gordon turns two. Dee Gordon began this double play in pretty spectacular fashion, diving to make the stop and managing to flip/roll the ball over […]

Dugout Digest – the Rockies are cratering

A month ago on May 7th, the Rockies were on top of the world. After thrashing the Rangers 9-2 on May 7th, the team was 22-14 and tied for first place in the NL West. Since then, they’ve been a disaster. Colorado is 6-16 in their last 22 games, and have fallen to 9.5 games […]

Legendary baseball man Don Zimmer passes away at 83

We interrupt your daily brigade of silliness for some somber news – Don Zimmer, a baseball man in every sense of the phrase, has passed away at the age of 83. Zimmer had worked in baseball as a player, coach, or manager since 1949, and had been a senior adviser with the Rays since 2004. […]

Ten unexpected players having All-Star worthy seasons

We’re still over a month away from this summer’s All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis. As the current fan balloting leaders trickle out each week, we’re typically seeing the players you’d expect at the top of the charts – you know, guys like Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, and Yadier Molina. We’re also seeing some […]

This week in replay reviews (June 4th edition)

Every time I think that we’re done with controversy and replay, things spiral out of control even quicker than I could imagine… May 28th, Tigers vs Athletics – Miggy can’t slide. This slide by Miguel Cabrera was…not good. And it almost resulted in him getting rewarded with a double. Thankfully, the replay went ahead and […]

A Cubs scoreboard operator fell asleep on the job

In the midst of the fifth inning of a long Mets-Cubs game on Tuesday night, the SNY camera crew panned up to the famous hand-operated Wrigley Field scoreboard, and found one of the operators of the scoreboard taking a snooze. It’s not like this happened during a rain delay, or during a marathon extra inning game – it was the fifth inning! He’s going to have a rough time explaining this to his bosses – just resting his eyes I guess, right?

A Pablo Sandoval foul ball broke a reporter’s laptop

The worst thing that can happen if you’re in the press box at a ballgame is what happened to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon on Tuesday at Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark. In the eighth inning, Pablo Sandoval fouled a ball back behind the plate…and it smashed Sheldon’s laptop, rendering it useless. The timing sucked too – in the eighth inning of an 8-3 game? Sheldon probably had his game story all ready to go, but Sandoval’s foul ball went ahead and ruined all that hard work.

Dugout Digest – who in the hell is Henderson Alvarez?

I obviously know who Henderson Alvarez is. He’s a Marlins starting pitcher that they acquired from the Blue Jays two winters ago. But I have no idea who this guy wearing Alvarez’s jersey is. On Tuesday night, Alvarez threw his fourth complete game shutout over his last 13 starts (dating back to last year), walking […]

Casey McGehee nearly got impaled by Giancarlo Stanton’s bat

Here’s an absolutely terrifying moment from Tuesday night’s Rays-Marlins game. Giancarlo Stanton got sawed off on a pitch by Rays starter Chris Archer, and his bat barrel flew towards the on deck circle and smashed Casey McGehee right in the gut. This could have been an awful situation, and McGehee could have been seriously hurt. Thankfully, he was OK, and stayed in the game.

Jon Singleton’s first major league hit was a homer

This weekend, it was Cardinals rookie Oscar Taveras who homered for his first major league hit. On Tuesday night, it was Astros rookie Jon Singleton who homered for his first career hit. The homer was a missile off of Angels reliever Matt Shoemaker that landed in Houston’s bullpen in right center field at Minute Maid Park. The future is now, Astros fans.

The most exciting walk offs of the week (June 3rd edition)

Were there awesome walk offs this week? Of course there were. Let’s stop screwing around and get right to it. May 27th, Rangers vs Twins All Joakim Soria had to do was grab this dribbler and throw it to a base – any base – before the runner got there. He couldn’t even do that. […]
