Dugout Digest – the farewell tour begins

The Derek Jeter farewell tour started in Houston on Tuesday, and the outcome was hilarious – the Astros beat the Yankees 6-2. If we’re going to be subjected to a year of Jeter fellation, it would be perfect if the Yankees were a fourth or fifth place team this season in the AL East. Game […]

A’s rained out at the Coliseum for first time since 1998

Tuesday night’s game between the Oakland A’s and Cleveland Indians was postponed due to rain. Rainouts happen, but not at Oakland’s O.co Coliseum. It is the the first day-night doubleheader in the Coliseum’s history. A’s beat writer Jane Lee says the A’s will toy around with their rotation as a result of the postponement, calling up a […]

On Second Thought: D’Backs Double Dip

In last night’s fantastic Giants/D’Backs game, Arizona was basically handed the game thanks to a less-than-stellar performance from both Giants ace Madison Bumgarner and the Giants infield defense. However, while the Giants were able to make up their defensive mistakes with some prolific offense, the D’Backs made a couple of mistakes that they couldn’t bounce […]

Mets’ Bobby Parnell has torn MCL in right elbow

Bobby Parnell hasn’t boarded the elbow surgery bus with several of his major league peers yet. But the cruiser is running while the Mets and their closer try to determine if his 2014 season is already over. Parnell was diagnosed with a torn medial collateral ligament in his right elbow Tuesday. After Monday’s 9-7 opening day […]

Why are people angry about Brewers fans cheering Ryan Braun?

In the Brewers’ home opener on Monday against the Braves, Ryan Braun played his first game in the majors since July 21st. Brewers fans welcomed the 2011 NL MVP back to Miller Park with a rousing ovation, like they would for any superstar – PED suspension or no PED suspension. For some reason, this led […]

Brewers and White Sox switch to new closers with no warning

All Spring Training long, fans and experts obsess over their team’s depth chart. A particular point of focus for many teams is who is going to get named as the all-important (to some, anyway) closer. Just when we all think we’ve got it figured out, managers go and pull stunts like the White Sox and […]

A lot of trash accumulates on Rangers memorial statue

The tweet and corresponding picture kind of speaks for itself [via Big League Stew]: The statute depicts Shannon Stone and his son Cooper. In 2011, Shannon stumbled and fell 20 feet to his death after reaching for a ball tossed to him by Josh Hamilton. The Rangers dedicated the statute to fans the next year […]

Jose Reyes

Jose Reyes hurts his hamstring…again

Jose Reyes made it 10 games last season before getting hurt. This year, he made it one at-bat. Reyes led off the game for the Jays against Tampa Bay, and was robbed of a hit on a tailing liner on a diving catch by Desmond Jennings. He jogged off the field looking like everything was […]

VIDEO: Grady Sizemore goes 2-for-4, homers in first game since 2011

921 days. Two years, six months and nine days. That’s how long Grady Sizemore went between at bats in Major League Baseball.  Playing in his first MLB game since Sept. 22, 2011, the Boston Red Sox’s starting center fielder and sixth hitter on Opening Day singled in his first at bat. You would have to […]

Dugout Digest – one and done

Opening Day is in the books, and it was one hell of a day for most of the league – lots of dramatic games and exciting moments to kick off the 2014 season. Game of the Night: Giants 9, Diamondbacks 8. I think this game could best be described as “frantic”. Madison Bumgarner was out […]

Don Baylor injures ankle catching first pitch

Before Monday night’s Mariners-Angels game, former Angels great Vladimir Guerrero threw out the first pitch to new Angels hitting coach (and another former Angels great) Don Baylor. After catching the pitch, Baylor seemingly injured his ankle and needed to be helped off the field. What an odd incident, and hopefully Baylor just sprained his ankle and will be back in the dugout sooner rather than later.

UPDATE: It’s a fractured right femur for Baylor, and he’ll undergo surgery on Tuesday. Awful.

Alex Gonzalez gets two big hits for Tigers, including 2014’s first walkoff

Keeping in mind that we shouldn’t overreact to anything that occurs on Opening Day, Tigers fans rode quite the emotional roller coaster on Monday in regards to new shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Trading for the 37-year-old infielder was a head-scratching move for Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski. Yes, the team needed a shortstop following the likely […]
