Bryce Harper takes knee to head, stays in game

A bit of a scary moment took place in the second inning of Monday’s Nationals-Mets game at Citi Field. Bryce Harper slid into second base to break up a double play, and ended up taking Eric Young Jr.’s knee to his head. Harper stayed down on the infield for a minute or two before walking off under his own power.

Harper would stay in the game, but my first thought was about Justin Morneau taking a knee to the head back in 2010, causing a concussion that changed his career. Hopefully, the aftermath for Harper is nowhere near as bad as it was for Morneau.

Shane Victorino starts the year on the DL

Jackie Bradley Jr. lost his spring training competition with Grady Sizemore for Boston’s centerfielder job, but it turns out he’ll still find himself on the Opening Day roster. Bradley takes the place of Shane Victorino, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list just before today’s opener against Baltimore. Victorino, who played in just 122 […]

Yasiel Puig wanted his teammates’ help to improve his game

Dodgers GM Ned Colletti on the reported clubhouse meeting between Yasiel Puig and the Dodgers…

“He called it,” Colletti said on SiriusXM. “He wanted to know how he can get better and some of our veteran guys stood up and told him. And they told him how much they love him and how much they want him on the team and like having him here. But here are a couple of things … that we’d like you to be more focused on, get better at.”

[…]

“He’s (Puig) a young guy with maybe two or three months of minor-league experience and there’s still a learning curve,” Colletti said Sunday. “And because he is so good at so many things and he’s got the persona that draws the light to him on every at-bat or every ball hit to right field or every throw that he makes, everything is examined tighter.

“But I think that there has been maturity that has come along. … And I think it continues to be part of the process. But he sought it out the other day. He asked the question. He was searching for his peers to tell him what they thought he needed to do to get better and they did. So I see that as a good sign.”

Dugout Digest – Opening Day 2014

Well folks, we’ve finally made it. We’ve survived a long, harsh winter, and reached Opening Day. On Sunday night, ESPN kicked off the season in San Diego, and that’s where we’re going to start. Game of the Night: Padres 3, Dodgers 1. Despite only having a 1-0 lead, the Dodgers looked firmly in control of […]

Oakland’s O.co Coliseum is flooding again

Saturday’s game between the A’s and Giants at Oakland’s O.co Coliseum was canceled due to rain. But that rain brought a familiar visitor back to the Athletics’ home ballpark: Flooding! According to the San Francisco Chronicle‘s Susan Slusser, water was bubbling up from the shower drains and toilets in the Athletics coaches’ locker room. The […]

Freak out during an earthquake? Not Vin Scully

Los Angeles experienced a 5.1 earthquake during the sixth inning of Friday night’s Dodgers-Angels game. While the ballpark was shaken, Vin Scully was not. As you might expect, the veteran Dodgers announcer kept his cool, explaining to viewers as the center field camera shook that there was “a little tremor in the ballpark.”

Compare Scully’s call to the slightly more excited reactions from Scully’s fellow announcers.

Tim Lincecum takes line drive off left knee

With just three days before opening day, it looked as if the Giants might have lost one of their top starting pitchers. Facing the A’s Friday night, Tim Lincecum took a line drive by Daric Barton off his left knee in the fourth inning and had to be helped off the field.

Lincecum said he didn’t believe he was seriously hurt at the time because Barton’s liner hit him on a fleshy part of the knee, rather than the kneecap. But while trying to walk it off, he felt a “dead leg” sensation which made it appear as if the right-hander could be significantly injured. Lincecum didn’t put any weight on his left leg as he left the game.

After the game, however, Lincecum appeared to be fine. X-rays taken of the knee were negative and according to reports, the pitcher was walking around the Giants’ clubhouse without a limp.

Depending on how the knee responds on Saturday, the Giants and Lincecum are planning for him to make his scheduled start against the D-Backs on Thursday. If Lincecum experiences major soreness or swelling, manager Bruce Bochy said Yusmiero Petit will likely get the nod.

Mike Trout of the Angels

Angels sign Mike Trout to six-year, $144.5 million extension

‘Tis the season to sign superstars to massive contract extensions, apparently. Yesterday it was Miguel Cabrera. Today, it is Mike Trout’s turn. The exact figure is actually $144.5 million. The deal starts in 2015, so it buys out his arbitration years and three years of free agency. He’ll be a free agent after the 2020 […]

MLB, MLBPA announce new PED penalties

A lot of people weren’t happy when Jhonny Peralta was allowed to return from his 50-game Biogenesis suspension to play in the postseason. Peralta served his time, then proceeded to hit .333/.353/.545 in the postseason and cash in on the free agent market with a four-year contract. Under new penalties announced by MLB and the […]

TOC 2014 staff predictions

Opening Day is upon us, and what better way to get hyped for the season by looking at largely meaningless predictions by our staff? Last year’s predictions were pretty terrible – none of us had the World Champion Red Sox even making the Postseason. We all had the Nationals and Angels making the playoffs, and […]

Giancarlo Stanton took batting practice in a junkyard

This spring, MLB and MTV are partnering on a new show called Off the Bat from the MLB Fan Cave. The show debuts this Tuesday, and on the premiere episode, host Melanie Iglesias took Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton to a junkyard for some batting practice. The aftermath is pretty violent, but in all honesty, I expected a lot more carnage.

5 teams that would love a spring training do-over

As baseball fans, we’re all excited to get spring training out of the way and start the regular season. Of course, the preseason provides the opportunity for necessary preparation, while also building anticipation and excitement. But for a handful of MLB teams, the spring brought disappointment, possibly landing some significant blows to postseason and championship […]
