A.J. Griffin latest MLB pitcher set for Tommy John surgery

Add another pitcher to list of Tommy John surgery patients. This seems to be happening at least twice a week. The latest to join the club is Oakland Athletics right-hander A.J. Griffin, set to go under the knife on Wednesday. The immediate future didn’t look good for Griffin in mid-March when he developed flexor tendinitis […]

Matt Cain was scratched because of a sandwich-related injury

Matt Cain didn’t start for the Giants on Tuesday night, and people immediately began freaking out when Yusmeiro Petit took the mound at AT&T Park. Initial word began to trickle in that Cain was scratched because of a cut on his finger as opposed to any arm problems, which is a good thing. Petit also […]

Did ESPN’s Jayson Stark inadvertently help Pete Rose stay banned for life?

http://youtu.be/rj2VT1DZx74?t=2m31s

ESPN’s Jayson Stark was on Olbermann last night, and in the light of Donald Sterling’s lifetime ban from the NBA, Pete Rose’s lifetime suspension from baseball came up. Stark reveals that in 2003, he reported about a meeting between Rose, Mike Schmidt, Joe Morgan, and Bud Selig that was centered around Rose being reinstated. The parties involved apparently blamed Stark for “setting in motion forces in the universe” that resulted in negative feelings about Rose coming back up and him staying barred for life.

Keith Olbermann himself also revealed that in 2009, he witnessed a discussion between Rose and a member of the commissioner’s office about his reinstatement that was torpedoed once Olbermann reported on it. Of course it’s those damn reporters’ fault that Rose isn’t back in baseball, they did their jobs and didn’t cover for him!

Kevin Frandsen’s slick behind-the-back catch

The Washington Nationals will certainly miss Bryce Harper in left field for the next two months. But in the meantime, one of Harper’s replacements is doing his best to keep us entertained.

In the third inning of the Nats’ 4-3 win over the Astros on Tuesday, Kevin Frandsen played a carom off the left-field wall in perhaps the most creative — or lucky — way possible. Drifting back on Jason Castro’s fly ball to left, Frandsen knew it was going to hit the wall and turned back toward the infield. But he instinctively stuck his glove out behind his back and caught the ricochet.

“Just in case,” he said afterwards. Making it look natural, Frandsen then threw the ball toward home plate, preventing Dexter Fowler from scoring.

Could he even do that again if he tried? Maybe Frandsen just provided MLB with an idea for a new skills competition during All-Star Weekend: a baseball version of H-O-R-S-E.

Dugout Digest – rain rain, go away

Rain was a factor all throughout baseball on Tuesday night. A pair of games, Dodgers-Twins and Pirates-Orioles, were never started and postponed. Several other games, including Tigers-White Sox, Mets-Phillies, Cubs-Reds, and Blue Jays-Royals, all featured substantial rain delays. Nights like this suck – the evening just turns into a mess of rain and mud, turning […]

Yankee fans accuse Cano of selling out, break the irony meter

To the surprise of virtually no one, Robinson Cano was greeted by a chorus of boos upon his return to Yankee Stadium for the first time since signing with the Seattle Mariners. That seems like a bit much since Cano didn’t exactly burn bridges on his way out of town, but hey, fans like to boo. However, some fans decided to take things a step further:

If you listen closely enough, you can hear fans chanting “You sold out!” to Cano.

In related news, I regret to inform you that the entire Yankee fan base has perished from an overdose of irony. Somehow, it is lost on those misguided Yankees fans that their team’s primary strategy for building a contending ballclub for the last few decades has been to convince other players to “sell out” and sign with them. This last offseason alone, the Yankees lured Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Masahiro Tanaka to the Bronx entirely based on the fact that they were offering the most money.

Yet Cano leaves town because, for once, the Yankees were not the highest bidder and he is derided as a sell out. Yep, sure, makes sense.

Never stop, Yankees fans. Never stop.

The most exciting walk offs of the week (April 29th edition)

This past week featured even more exciting walk offs, adding to a season that has been pretty awesome so far. April 23rd, Astros vs Mariners – Seager time again. Seattle’s offense was dormant for most of this game, notching two hits through the first six innings of the game. Then in the seventh, a Kyle […]

Robinson Cano surprises booing Yankee fans on Jimmy Fallon

On Monday night’s episode of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Robinson Cano pulled off one hell of a prank on Yankees fans. The fans booed a picture of Cano, and then, surprise! Cano popped out from behind the picture and the fans suddenly stopped booing and looked like embarrassed fools.

The best part? The fan who railed on Cano for leaving for the money. He’s probably the same guy that chastises his Red Sox fan coworker for Jacoby Ellsbury leaving Boston for New York’s money, right?

Dugout Digest – somewhat lacking

Monday was a crappy day to watch baseball. There were only seven games on the slate, and one was rained out. In the remaining six games, only two starters had a game score over 60, and a total of nine home runs were hit. You can’t win ’em all, I guess. Game of the Night: […]

Bryce Harper will be out until at least early July

Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper, placed on the DL on Sunday, will be out until at least early July, according to ESPN’s Keith Law. Harper is having surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb, the same injury that put Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton out of action earlier this year. Without Harper, Washington […]

Jose Abreu exceeding expectations by miles for the Chicago White Sox

The recent influx of Cuban prospects making the jump over to Major League Baseball has resulted in something of a mixed bag for some teams (See the Chicago Cubs and Jorge Soler), but some have not only risen to the expectations set forth when the signed eight figure deals with big league clubs, they’ve surpassed […]

Carlos Gomez drives young female fan to tears

Carlos Gomez may be the most confusing player to read in all of baseball. Before Sunday’s Cubs-Brewers game, a starstruck fan was so excited to meet Gomez that she was moved to tears before and after receiving a pair of hugs from Milwaukee’s All-Star center fielder.

Any time an athlete can make a fan’s day with such a simple gesture, they need to do it. It took what, ten seconds of his time to make this girl that happy? It’s a tradeoff that definitely needs to happen more often.
