Dugout Digest – the emergence of Rick Porcello

During his career, Rick Porcello has almost been thought as a disappointment. This is a guy who was a first round pick out of high school in 2007, and made his major league debut in 2009 at age 20. His rookie year ERA was 3.96, and that has been his career best up until this […]

Cleveland turns triple play

Cleveland turns 7-2-4 triple play with help of replay

Triple plays are rare. Two teams challenging different parts of the same play is even more rare. Both happened at once in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. In the 4th inning, Adrian Gonzalez flew out to Michael Brantley in left field with runners on the corners and nobody out. Dee Gordon tried to tag from […]

Reality check: It’s time to tear the Phillies down, Ruben Amaro Jr.

The Phillies had a hard collision with reality over the weekend. Philadelphia was swept in a four-game series at home by the Braves, effectively burying whatever faint chances at contention that may have still been entertained. Though just about everyone had already lowered the coffin into the ground weeks ago, the Phillies showed signs of […]

The best and worst MLB players of June 2014

With the month of June behind us, we’re now three months of the way through the 2014 MLB season. I think that by this point, we’ve realized which players and teams are good, and which are…well, not so good. I don’t think any of the names you’re going to see on this month’s edition of […]

Manny hits his first homer for Iowa, complete with bat flip

Manny Ramirez may be 42 years old, but one of the original kings of pimping home runs showed Monday night that he still has it. In his second game as player/coach for the Iowa Cubs, Manny crushed a two-run homer off of Omaha’s Sugar Ray Marimon to centerfield. The bat flip is vintage Manny, and […]

Does Bryce Harper have a point about the Washington Nationals lineup?

Bryce Harper finally made his long-awaited return to the Washington Nationals on Monday night, after a wildly successful rehab stint down in the minors. It didn’t take long, though, for him to make waves with his comments, as he (somewhat subtly) criticized the lineup that was rolled out by manager Matt Williams. Now, the Nats have managed to hang […]

Brian McCann thinks his first year as a Yankee has been horrible

When ask to characterize his first season in the Bronx, here’s what Yankees catcher Brian McCann had to say about himself.

“Horrible. Hitting — you know, I feel good behind the plate. But swinging the bat, I need to get better.”

McCann also spoke about the pressure he’s putting on himself.

“It’s putting a lot. Myself — I’m a big reason for that. Our pitching staff has been amazing. It’s the big reason why we’re at where we’re at.”

Dugout Digest – Chicago’s new ace

The Cubs have a pitcher this year that they might actually build around, and not just trade the moment a team offers them  warm body – Jake Arrieta. His 1.81 ERA leads the team and (although he’s not qualified for the ERA title thanks to him only making 11 starts this season) is the lowest […]

The most exciting walk offs for the week ending June 29th

This week, we actually had an abundance of walk off wins…we’re in the golden age now, gang. Unfortunately, there weren’t exactly many game-winning homers getting blasted into the the sky, but we’ll have to make do for now. June 23rd, White Sox vs Orioles And of course, we start with that walk off homer – […]

San Francisco Giants

What happened to the San Francisco Giants?

Three weeks ago, the San Francisco Giants were one of the best teams in baseball. When they beat the New York Mets on June 8, they moved to 42-21, giving them the best record in the National League and pushing them a season-high 21 games over .500. They were on pace to win 108 games […]

Dugout Digest – the wild Wild Card battle

I know we’re just over the halfway point of the season, but the Wild Card races in both leagues are going to be bonkers. In the National League. The top Wild Card is jointly held by the Giants and Dodgers, who are tied for the NL West lead. Then…there’s the second spot. The Reds, Nationals, […]

Dugout Digest – the doubleheaders that did nothing

Both the Braves and Nationals had a chance to gain ground on the other on Saturday. Each team had a doubleheader against a less than solid NL team – the Braves took on the Phillies, while the Nationals battled the Cubs. At the end of the day when all the smoke had cleared and all […]

Who gets the better end of Pirates-Angels, Grilli-Frieri challenge trade?

Being a major league closer can be a volatile gig. The latest example of that was demonstrated by the Pirates and Angels, who swapped struggling relievers on Friday. Pittsburgh sent Jason Grilli to Anaheim in exchange for Ernesto Frieri, a somewhat surprising deal given the success each pitcher had as his team’s closer last season. […]

Braves minor league team throws back to back no-hitters

In your minor league quirk post of the day, the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League threw no-hitters in back to back games. Lynchburg, the high-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, allowed zero hits to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, a Royals affiliate, on both Thursday and Friday. Thursday’s game was started by Lucas Sims, Atlanta’s […]

Dugout Digest – first to 50 wins!

Alright everyone, we can go ahead and shut the MLB season down – we have our first team with 50 wins, and it’s the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee’s season has been a shocker, but you can boil that success down to one word – health. Last year, 12 different pitchers started games for Milwaukee. This year, […]
