Mike Trout obliterates home run, longest in majors since 2012

On Friday night at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mike Trout did something pornographic to a baseball.

ESPN is calling it at 489 feet, which would be the longest hit in the majors since Giancarlo Stanton hit a 494 foot bomb in 2012. If that number seems a little off to you, it’s been confirmed by ESPN’s Hit Tracker, which is what we use every week for our longest homers of the week feature (and you’ll be seeing this hoer by Trout in next week’s edition).

This homer by Trout is such a massive blast. It cleared the batter’s eye in center field, which is a good 30 or so feet high and more than 410 feet from home plate. Yeah…let’s go ahead and put this in our ledger as the longest homer of the first half (even with a couple of weeks left), and possibly, the longest homer of the 2014 season.

Phillies broadcaster catches home run ball, throws it back

During Friday night’s Braves-Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies are doing something cool. Their three-man broadcast booth of Tom McCarthy, Jamie Moyer, and Matt Stairs is stationed in the center field seats for the evening. Where the broadcasters are located is in firing range for home run balls, and that’s exactly what happened in the first inning when Freddie Freeman smashed a three-run bomb off of Kyle Kendrick.

The home run ball was caught (with one hand, mind you) by McCarthy, who then gave in to the wishes of the Phillie faithful and threw the ball back onto the field. I normally hate when fans throw home run balls back, but this was a thing of beauty.

The longest homers for the week ending June 26th

Last week was kind of a disappointing week – there wasn’t that one blast that really wowed us all. This week, though, we’ve got at least one that’ll make your eyes pop out of your head. 1. George Springer vs Aaron Harang, 465 feet (June 24th) This homer doesn’t seem like much of anything…until you […]

Dugout Digest – the hapless Rangers

I never expected…*this* from the Texas Rangers. Texas has the third-worst record in the American League, better than just the Rays and (barely) the Astros. I know the team has been completely destroyed with injuries, but the bottom never really fell out until this eight game losing streak has pushed them eight games under .500. […]

Video: Trailer for ‘The Battered Bastards of Baseball’

Earlier this year, we told you about a documentary called The Battered Bastards of Baseball that played at the Sundance Film Festival and was popular with movie bloggers and critics. The film is about the Portland Mavericks, an independent minor league team that existed from 1973 to 1977. Two of the well-known names to play for the Mavericks were Jim Bouton and actor Kurt Russell (the son of team owner Bing Russell).

At the time, the question was whether or not the film would get a theatrical release around the country, allowing fans to see it. In perhaps the best possible development, Netflix picked up the documentary and will make it available for streaming on July 11. Here is the trailer.

The Battered Bastards of Baseball is also being developed as a feature film by producer Justin Lin (who directed three of the “Fast and Furious” movies), and could possibly be directed by Todd Field (In the Bedroom, Little Children), who was a bat boy for the Mavericks.

The Brewers bullpen pays tribute to Will Smith in music video

The Milwaukee Brewers have been on a tear with viral videos this season, and the latest one is a tribute to Will Smith, starring…Milwaukee reliever Will Smith and the rest of the Brewers bullpen in a mashup of various Will Smith songs.

I almost want the Brewers to keep playing well just so we can keep getting more videos like this. These are phenomenal.

Dugout Digest – big time Timmy Jim steps up

Tim Lincecum’s second no-hitter against the Padres on Wednesday was big for the Giants for a couple of reasons. First off, the Giants have been sliding as of late – heading into Wednesday’s game, they were just 3-11 over their past two-plus weeks. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have been on fire, and after winning again on […]

Josh Reddick reaches behind Mets fan to catch foul ball

During Wednesday’s Athletics-Mets game at Citi Field, Josh Reddick made a great catch on a foul pop-up…and he had to avoid a fan to even snag the ball.

There really was no reason for the fan to move – if the ball is out of play, it’s fair game for the fans. And Eric Young Jr. was batting – not an Oakland hitter. Reddick actually did him a favor though. Do you see the way this fan was holding his phone trying to make the catch? If he actually did catch it, he would have his hands full of a shattered phone, and nobody wants that.

Ian Desmond was offended that Carlos Gomez slid hard into second

Here’s your bit of stupidity for the day – in the bottom of the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game between Washington and Milwaukee, benches cleared after Ian Desmond took exception with a hard slide into second base by Carlos Gomez. The funny thing was that Desmond wasn’t even in the vicinity of Gomez’s slide, as […]

Brewers fan dives onto dugout to catch foul ball

During Wednesday’s Nationals-Brewers game, an overzealous Brewers fan reached out and dove onto the team’s dugout to grab a foul ball off the bat of Martin Maldonado. Check it out.

He *really* wanted that ball. Did anyone tell him that the Brewers catcher who hit it *wasn’t* NL MVP candidate Jonathan Lucroy?

Tim Lincecum no-hits Padres for the second time in his career

We’re now up to three no-hitters during the 2014 season. On Wednesday, Tim Lincecum tossed his second career no-hitter against the San Diego Padres as the Giants won 4-0. This no-hitter was a little easier for Lincecum than his first one against the Padres, when he threw 148 pitches at Petco Park last season. This […]

The best defensive plays for the week ending June 24th

Welcome to this edition of the best defensive plays of the week, now coming at you every Wednesday. June 19th, Reds vs Pirates – Billy Hamilton gets some air. Before the season, there were questions as to whether or not Billy Hamilton could adequately play center field. This year, he’s turned himself into a pretty […]

Evan Longoria jumps into crowd after making great catch

Check out this sequence of events during Evan Longoria’s wonderful catch in the third inning of today’s Pirates-Rays game

So, to recap…

-Longoria runs from his position at third base to the on-field bullpens halfway up the left field line
-He runs over one of the mounds in the bullpen to make the catch
-He hangs on to the ball as he’s about to hit the fence
-He jumps on top of, and then over, the fence while holding the ball

Got all that? The man is a wizard with the glove.
