Dugout Digest – blowouts and walkoffs

Yesterday was a solid day of baseball, right? Well, the two daytime games were pretty drab (unless you're a Cardinals or Giants fan), but the two nighttime games were absolutely unbelievable. –Cardinals 8, Nationals 0 –Giants 8, Reds 3 –Yankees 3, Orioles 2 (12 innings) –A's 4, Tigers 3 Where does this leave us? Well…in […]

AL Division Series Game Four: A’s 4, Tigers 3

The Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 to tie their AL Division Series matchup at two games each. This game…oh man, this game. It actually resembled the first game of this series a lot. Just like Jarrod Parker in game one, AJ Griffin kept the A's in the game on Wednesday, allowing just two […]

The A’s walk off on the Tigers in the ninth

The A's forced a game five with a shocking, come from behind win in Oakland on Wednesday. Trailing 3-1 in the ninth, Tigers manager Jim Leyland went with closer Jose Valverde, and his night started badly. Valverde allowed a single to Josh Reddick to lead off the inning, and Josh Donaldson followed up with a […]

AL Division Series Game Three: Yankees 3, Orioles 2

The New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 in 12 innings to take a 2-1 lead in their AL Division Series matchup. In typical Yankees fashion, it was a dramatic finish, with a pair of Raul Ibanez homers turning a 2-1, ninth inning Orioles lead into a 3-2 loss. This was a game dominated […]

Raul Ibanez breaks Baltimore’s heart – twice

How's this for a pair of playoff moments? The Yankees trailed the Orioles 2-1 going into the bottom of the ninth in Wednesday's ALDS game three. Baltimore's closer Jim Johnson was on the mound looking to finish the Yankees off and give the Orioles a 2-1 series lead, but Raul Ibanez had other ideas. Yankees […]

NL Division Series Game Four: Giants 8, Reds 3

The San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-3 in their NL Division Series matchup, tying the series at two games apiece. The Giants doubled their total run output in this series in this game alone, going crazy for eight runs against a Reds pitching staff that was lost without ace Johnny Cueto. Mike Leake […]

NL Division Series Game Three: Cardinals 8, Nationals 0

The Cardinals smashed the Nationals 8-0 in game three of their NL Division Series matchup, taking a 2-1 lead in the series. St Louis jumped all over Edwin Jackson, a starter for last year's Cardinals World Championship team, scoring four runs on six hits over the first two innings of the game. A three-run homer […]

Will the Athletics’ playoff run jeopardize their future?

The Oakland Athletics might be the best story of the 2012 season.  They entered the season with many expecting them to amongst the worst teams in baseball and ended up shocking the baseball world by upsetting the Rangers to win the AL West division crown.  It is the sort of thing that fairy tales are […]

Mike Leake will start game four for the Reds

After my opining late last night about whether the Reds should start Mike Leake or Mat Latos in Wednesday's NL Division Series game four, the decision has bubbled up early this morning: Dusty Baker is going with Leake, meaning that Johnny Cueto will be out until the World Series (if the Reds advance that far). […]

Dugout Digest – NO SWEEPS

Going into Tuesday's pair of Division Series games, there was a very real chance that both the Giants and A's would be swept out of the playoffs. I am proud to announce that neither team lost last night, and there won't be any sweeps in any of the four Division Series matchups this week. WOOHOO! […]

Johnny Cueto won’t start game four for the Reds

Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, who left Saturday's NL Division Series opener with the Giants after just eight pitches, won't be starting game four on Wednesday. Cueto's injury that caused him to leave Saturday's game, initially diagnosed as back spasms, is now described as a mild right oblique strain. Cincinnati now has an interesting decision […]

AL Division Series Game Three: A’s 2, TIgers 0

With their backs against the wall, the A's needed a win on Tuesday night to stay alive in the postseason. Brett Anderson stepped up in his first start in 20 days, and Oakland earned a 2-0 win to cut their deficit in their AL Division Series matchup with the Tigers to two games to one. […]

Coco Crisp robs Prince Fielder of a home run

In Sunday's Tigers-Athletics game, Oakland center fielder Coco Crisp dropped a fly ball to allow two Tigers runs to score. Crisp made up for that in spades on Tuesday night, robbing Prince Fielder of a home run to lead off the second inning. Crisp leapt at the wall and threw his glove over the fence, […]

NL Division Series Game Three: Giants 2, Reds 1

The Cincinnati Reds pitching staff sliced and diced the San Francisco Giants offense on Tuesday night, but some tenth inning miscues by the Reds handed the Giants a run on a silver platter, giving them a 2-1 win. The Reds still lead the series two games to one. The main story of this game was […]

Jaime Garcia officially replaced on Cardinals NLDS roster

Apparently, the Cardinals didn't like the results of starting pitcher Jaime Garcia's MRI, which was deemed necessary after Monday's starting pitcher left the game after just two innings complaining about discomfort in his shoulder. The official diagnosis for Garcia's shoulder is a rotator cuff strain.
