Cubs defeat Cardinals 6-4, advance to NLCS

The monkey is off the back of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs beat the Cardinals 6-4 in Game 4 of the NLDS on Tuesday night, winning the series 3-1. It’s the first playoff series that the team has ever won at Wrigley Field, and just the second playoff series since 1908 (with the other coming […]

Kyle Schwarber hits titanic home run over Wrigley Field scoreboard

Statcast measured this 7th inning Kyle Schwarber homer at 419 feet, which seems like a load of bullshit. But my god, look at where this Kevin Siegrist pitch went once Schwarber’s bat made contact with it. Schwarber’s homer increased the Cubs’ lead to 6-4, putting them that much closer to the NLCS.

Javier Baez smashes homer to right, gives Cubs 4-2 lead

Javier Baez is only in the lineup for the Cubs during Game 4 of the NLDS because regular Chicago shortstop Addison Russell is day to day with a hamstring injury. So it must have been pretty satisfying for Baez and manager Joe Maddon when he hit a long three-run homer in the second inning off […]

Cardinals, Dodgers hoping short rest leads to longer series

The Cardinals and Dodgers, the two highest seeds in the National League, both find themselves staring elimination in the face after both suffered disheartening losses last night. The Cards did what they wanted to do against Jake Arrieta – make him look human – but still couldn’t hold down the powerful Cubs lineup. The Dodgers […]

Mets bust out bats for 13-7 romp, 2-1 NLDS lead over Dodgers

Game 3 of the NLDS between the Dodgers and Mets posed some intriguing pitching questions. Could the Dodgers get a good start from someone besides Clayton Kershaw or Zack Greinke, with Brett Anderson getting the nod? And for the Mets, how would Matt Harvey pitch in his first postseason start when his ability to pitch […]

Yoenis Cespedes tattoos homer to put Mets up 10-3

With emotions running high at Citi Field, Yoenis Cespedes put his mark on the NL Division Series. Facing Dodgers pitcher Alex Wood with two outs in the fourth inning, Cespedes blew the game wide open by absolutely demolishing this three-run homer into the left field bleachers. Cespedes is now 3/3 with three runs scored and […]

Cubs batter Cardinals pitching in 8-6 NLDS Game 3 victory

The Chicago Cubs are one win away from their first NLCS since 2003 following a 8-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the NLDS on Monday night. Chicago jumped on Michael Wacha early, and didn’t let up. In the first inning, the Cubs put two men on before Anthony Rizzo lined […]

Blue Jays push ALDS to Game 5 with 8-4 victory over Rangers

Among the many reasons that the Toronto Blue Jays were viewed as a favorite to win the AL pennant (at least among the staff here at The Outside Corner) was their lineup’s ability to crush opposing pitching. Playing the role of Wile E. Coyote underneath a piano dropped from the sky in Monday’s Game 4 […]

Citi Field gave Chase Utley a predictably chilly reception

During pregame introductions at Citi Field before Monday night’s NLDS Game 3, Mets fans gave Chase Utley an incredibly warm reception. Just kidding, they booed him like they’ve never booed anyone before. Utley isn’t in the starting lineup for the Dodgers while he appeals his two-game suspension. If he gets a pinch hitting appearance tonight, […]

Royals stage furious rally to beat Astros 9-6, force Game 5

It looked like the AL Division Series was in the bag for the Houston Astros. The Kansas City Royals’ offense didn’t show any signs of life through the first seven innings minus a two-run homer by Salvador Perez in the second inning, which seemed like a distant memory by the time the Astros tacked three more […]

Replay is broken and should have been fixed months ago

This afternoon, the Houston Astros played host to the Kansas City Royals. This was Game 4 of the American League Division Series and the Astros had a 2-1 lead. If the Royals lose, they’re out of the playoffs. Obviously it’s a very important game. Arguably it’s the most important game of the year because it’s going […]

Clarifying the slide rule

Over the weekend an incident occurred between Chase Utley of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Ruben Tejada of the New York Mets. If you’re somehow not already well aware of what happened, I’ll give you the brief details. Utley was running from first to second after a ball was put in play. He then slid into second […]

There is no clear cut take on Chase Utley’s side

For the first time in the 2015 Postseason, controversy has arrived! During Saturday’s NLDS Game 2 between the Mets and Dodgers, a hard slide by Chase Utley in the seventh inning injured Ruben Tejada and may have changed the trajectory of the series.  If the classic matchup needed more hype, it has been provided. Furthermore, in this social media […]

Marco Estrada leads Blue Jays to 5-1 win over Rangers, prolonging ALDS

There will be no Division Series sweeps this year. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers 5-1 on Sunday night to cut the Rangers’ ALDS lead to 2-1, ensuring that there will be a Game 4 on Monday afternoon at Globe Life Park. Both sides got off to slow starts in the first two […]

Troy Tulowitzki’s three-run homer puts Blue Jays ahead 5-0

The Toronto Blue Jays were pressuring the Texas Rangers all game in Game 3 on Sunday night, but couldn’t completely break through. That is, until the sixth inning, when Troy Tulowitzki launched a three-homer off of Chi Chi Gonzalez to increase Toronto’s lead to 5-0. The Jays grounded into an astounding four double plays in innings […]
