Pirates finally calling up Gregory Polanco

Pirates fans, the charade is finally over. Gregory Polanco is on his way to the majors. The team announced the decision late Monday, after its 6-2 win over the Cubs. Second baseman Neil Walker was placed on the 15-day disabled list following an appendectomy. That precipitated the roster move that will bring Polanco to Pittsburgh. […]

Dugout Digest – the Indians are closing the gap

We have a more detailed column on this coming later today, but the Cleveland Indians have turned up the heat on the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. Cleveland is now just two games behind Detroit after their thumping of Texas on Monday night, and are actually even with the Tigers in the win column. […]

Recapping the week ending June 8th in baseball

Most impressive team of the week: San Francisco Giants. The Giants are the best team in baseball, and we’ve pretty much moved past the point where we can write their hot start off as a fluke. The team has won two-thirds of their games so far this season, hasn’t lost a series since dropping two […]

The Weekly Puig: Fourth Edition

Yasiel Puig really has taken his game to another level this season, establishing himself at the forefront of the race for the National League Most Valuable Player Award and firmly distinguishing himself as one of the league’s elite outfielders. One day, we may have the opportunity to discuss his transformation from solid ballplayer to superstar, but […]

Manny Machado went crazy over the weekend

After the series he had against Oakland, it’d be too easy to sit here and say Manny Machado is immature and needs to grow up. But Manny Machado is immature and probably needs to grow up. Machado’s interesting weekend started in the third inning Friday. He was standing at second with two outs when Adam […]

Dugout Digest – the mediocre National League East

We’re almost 40% of the way through the 2014 season, and while a few trends have become prevalent, one really jumps out at me – the National League East stinks. Seriously. The Braves, Nationals, and Marlins are all tied for first place, and all three teams are just three games above .500. That .525 winning […]

These two fans in Chicago tried to one-up each other with kindness

In the fifth inning of Sunday’s Marlins-Cubs game, a Marlins fan and a Cubs fan both came off looking like extraordinary gentlemen when it came to the matter of a foul ball. The Cubs fan dropped the ball, hit by Marcell Ozuna, onto the field. Nate Schierholtz tossed the ball up into the crowd, where it was caught by the Marlins fan. The Marlins fan then immediately tossed the ball to the Cubs fan, who was more than pleased that he ended up getting his ball. But then, things took another turn – the Cubs fan gave the ball to the Marlins fan’s son.

Say it with me: awwwww. Good on these guys for not turning into whiny children over a baseball.

A Padres fan was running around in a bear costume for some reason

Are there even bears anywhere in southern California, let alone San Diego? This guy must have been sweating his ass off in this bear costume, though – it’s still San Diego, and it’s still June. Anyway, it’s a good thing they were playing the Nationals – Jayson Werth and Adam LaRoche have the whole “furry” thing down pat.

Dugout Digest – rise of the Cubs?

Oh god, here we go again – the Cubs have won five games in a row and are only 5.5 games out of a playoff spot. Let’s get one thing straight – even though the Cubs are playing better lately, they’re not a contender by any stretch of the imagination. While they’re only 5.5 games […]

This Cubs fan was a little too excited about catching a Junior Lake home run

Junior Lake had a two homer day on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley in the Cubs’ 5-2 win over the Marlins. After Lake smoked his second homer of the day to left center field, the Cubs fan who caught the ball was juuuust a little pumped up about it. Seriously, look at this guy – taunting the Marlins outfielders, flexing, veins bulging out of his neck…take it down a notch, buddy. It’s just a baseball.

Here is the emotional pregame tribute to Don Zimmer by the Rays

Warning: this 22 minute tribute produced by the Rays prior to their game on Saturday with the Mariners will tug at your heartstrings. Several current and former Rays players spill their hearts out about the late Don Zimmer, as well as Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Derek Jeter. Among those in attendance include Joe Torre, Tommy Lasorda, and members of Zimmer’s family, including his wife Soot. The entire presentation was extremely well done by the Rays, and really is a must-watch to really comprehend how much Zimmer meant to so many people across the game.

Kendrys Morales signs with Minnesota Twins (for some reason)

As the draft wraps up today, Kendrys Morales’ wait in comp pick purgatory is finally over. The slugging DH/1B has agreed to a one-year deal with the Minnesota Twins for a prorated $12 million. At this point in the season, a prorated $12 million deal would pay Morales about $7.6 million for the rest of […]

Dugout Digest – the Giants are unstoppable

Everyone, myself included, assumed that the Los Angeles Dodgers would run away with the NL West. Two months into the 2014 season, a team is running away with the division, but it’s not the Dodgers – it’s the 2010 and 2012 World Champion San Francisco Giants. After rallying to beat the Mets on Friday night, […]

Cardinals turn triple play against Blue Jays

In the sixth inning of Friday night’s Cardinals-Blue Jays game, St. Louis pulled off a triple play. Jose Bautista hit a line drive to second baseman Daniel Descalso, who flipped to shortstop Jhonny Peralta for the second out, who fired the ball to first baseman Allen Craig for out number three. Considering Toronto had the bases loaded and none out (obviously) at the time, the triple play was a tough blow for the Blue Jays, who only managed to scrape two runs across the plate against Lance Lynn in this one.
