Yoenis Cespedes makes another great throw against the Angels

Really? He did it again? Yes, Yoenis Cespedes made a spectacular throw from the outfield for the second consecutive game, nailing another Angels runner on the basepaths Wednesday night. (Maybe he was upset that he didn’t have two plays on our list of 10 best outfield throws.)

You might think the Angels would know better than to test Cespedes’ arm after he gunned down Howie Kendrick at home plate on Tuesday, but that lesson apparently didn’t take. At least not with Albert Pujols (and maybe third base coach Gary DiSarcina), who was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple.

But Cespedes might also have a talent for getting the Angels to run into outs by initially bungling plays in the outfield before erasing his mistake with his rocket arm. What? The ball kicked away from me? No one remembers because I just threw you out, sir.

10 of the best outfield throws ever seen by mankind

Baseball fans woke up Wednesday morning to see one of the best outfield throws in recent memory, with Oakland’s Yoenis Cespedes gunning down the Angels’ Howie Kendrick at home plate. (Of course, some of you were likely fortunate enough to watch the play as it happened, or shortly thereafter, on Tuesday night.) How many times […]

This week in replay reviews (June 11th edition)

I think we’re getting used to replay – but that doesn’t mean controversy is dead and buried. Why would it be? June 4th, White Sox vs Tigers – rundown chaos. Rundowns where a team is able to get two outs but can’t are the worst. Adrian Gonzalez was originally ruled safe at third base, but […]

Lonnie Chisenhall’s coming out party

Monday night saw one of the better performances of anybody in Major League Baseball over the past several seasons, and that’s probably a tremendous understatement. Cleveland Indians third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall went 5-for-5 on the night, swatting three home runs and knocking in nine, as the Tribe routed the Texas Rangers by a count of 17-7. It was just the latest chapter […]

Dugout Digest – the Nationals are waking up

Washington has been in a state of mediocrity since last season. They were barely above .500 on September 1st before a strong final month made their year look respectable. This year, it was more of the same – through the first two months of the season, the Nationals were a sub-.500 team. But in June, […]

This Yoenis Cespedes throw is the grossest thing you’ll see all day

I know I’m a little late to the party on this, but this throw from Tuesday night by Yoenis Cespedes is just incredible. The hit by Mike Trout actually initially bounced off of Cespedes’ glove before he recovered and threw an absolute rainbow to the plate to nail Howie Kendrick. Derek Norris didn’t even need to move his glove, let alone squat! I don’t even have anything else to say – this was just an incredible play by Oakland’s right fielder.

Manny Machado says he’ll appeal 5-game suspension

“It was coming. We’re going to appeal it. I made my peace yesterday, and we’re going to move on from it. We’re going to go ahead and try to get that down.

“Obviously, I don’t want to be down for five days. I need to try to help this team in any way. We’ve got a lot of tough games up in the road, and I need to be a part of this team. I’ve been a part of this team for a long time, and I don’t want to be down for too many days.”

“[Fernando Abad] didn’t get suspended? I had no idea. I don’t really care. He’s a part of the Oakland A’s organization. I’m a Baltimore Oriole. I did what I did, and he did what he did. We both have to pay for the consequences.”

How are the Giants dominating the National League?

With the season two months in, the talk of small sample sizes have shifted to the back of discussions for the most part. Trends can tell us who is completely out of the race at this point (Yo! Philly!), who has been ravaged by injuries to the point where they have no shot of contending […]

The most exciting walk offs of the week (June 10th edition)

This week was actually pretty light on walk offs. From our usual starting point of Tuesday heading into the weekend, we only had three. Then the weekend came, and everything got thrown all out of whack. June 3rd, Mets vs Cubs 0-2, two outs? That’s clutch, Nate Schierholtz. June 4th, Red Sox vs Indians Well, […]

The wild and and crazy AL Central

The AL Central was supposed to be the least interesting division in baseball.  And why shouldn’t it have been?  The Tigers were going to just roll over the entire American League.  They’ve got a big-time payroll, and a lineup that features stars like Victor Martinez, Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler and Torii Hunter.  Their pitching staff […]

Trevor Cahill considered for return to rotation, DFA’d instead

The Arizona Diamondbacks have received a lot of criticism over the last few years for some of the roster decisions they have made. This is one of the reasons Tony LaRussa was brought on board as team president. Well, it doesn’t look like it is taking. Consider this quote from Kirk Gibson yesterday. Unto itself, […]

Bo Porter’s unique managing helps the Astros get a win

What Bo Porter did in the eighth inning on Monday night wasn’t breaking new ground, but it *was* something that we don’t see too often. In the bottom of the eighth, lefty Tony Sipp started off the inning by striking out lefty Gerardo Parra. There was no chance in hell that Porter was going to […]
