Dugout Digest – Orioles rising

Look who’s tied for first place in the AL East – it’s the Baltimore Orioles. On Thursday night, the Orioles caught a break when Yu Darvish was scratched from his start because of rain in Baltimore. They thrived without Texas’ ace on the mound, topping the Rangers 5-2 to complete a four game sweep. When […]

The Blue Jays and Athletics were part of the most confusing review yet

Alright folks, let’s watch this play in Oakland and try to unwrap what happened. With the bases loaded and one out in the second inning, Anthony Gose hit a grounder to first baseman Nate Freiman. Freiman attempted a swipe tag on Munenori Kawasaki, going from first to second, and missed, according to first base umpire […]

Seth Smith of the San Diego Padres

What does puzzling Seth Smith extension say about Padres’ future?

Being currently without a general manager isn’t stopping the San Diego Padres from doing some business. It’s just a bit curious that transactions like signing players to new contracts are happening without the executive that would normally attend to such matters in place. The Padres signed outfielder Seth Smith to

David Ortiz ranted about the Cubs playing day games

“Through the years I’ve talked to a lot of friends of mine that have played for the Cubs. The one thing that everyone talked about was the schedule in Chicago. They get excited walking into a city that’s based on baseball, but once they start dealing with the schedule it kind of mentally wears you down.

“Believe it or not that’s one of the biggest issues for that organization to become a winning ballclub. When you come down to the Cubs’ schedule it’s a game-changer, believe it or not. They play so many day games at home and then they have to travel to another city and adjust themselves to the night games.

“If the rest of the league had the same schedule that you have it’s fine. But once you play day games for about a week and next thing you know you have to go into a city and play night games, then the next thing you know you have to go to the West Coast and adjust to the time there, then you have to come back home and start playing day games, it’s too hard for baseball (players).”

Chicago Cubs better off trading Jeff Samardzija than keeping him

At some point in the near future, the Chicago Cubs are going to be a pretty good baseball team. In fact, over the course of the last month and a half, the Cubs have actually represented one of the better clubs in the National League. Of course, acknowledging the better teams in the NL is like pointing […]

Young fan at Marlins game gets slimed

Apparently, we’re back in the mid-90s and Nickelodeon slime baths are still a thing. To be fair, this *was* part of a promotion for Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards at Marlins Park. Regardless, I had no idea that Nickelodeon still even did their thing with the slime – I’m 28 now, my finger isn’t anywhere close […]

Dugout Digest – the Pirates are raising it again

What is the “it” being raised? Well, the Jolly Roger, of course. Pittsburgh beat Arizona 5-1 on Wednesday night to win their third game in a row, fifth out of six, and tenth out of 13 games. They’re still six games behind the first place Brewers in the NL Central, but have closed to within […]

Another beer vendor caught a foul ball in his bucket

In May, a beer vendor at Citizens Bank Park caught a foul ball in his beer bucket. On Wednesday, it happened again, this time at Comerica Park during the Athletics-Tigers game. It’s an epidemic, man. We can’t stop the beer vendors from taking all of the foul balls!

The best defensive plays for the week ending July 1st

We’ve got another week in the books, and it’s time to marvel at some awesome defense once again. The usual suspects are here, as you’d expect. June 25th, Pirates vs Rays – Longoria and the bullpen. On-field bullpens are the worst, and Evan Longoria could have gotten hurt chasing this foul pop-up at Tropicana Field. […]

The leaders of WAR: July Update

Everyone loves to track the potential award winners throughout the MLB season. MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year get more than their fair share of attention. Overlooked over the years, especially by the BBWAA, is WAR, the stat that actually provides a valuation of each and every player. In order to give WAR […]

MLB first basemen recite Lou Gehrig’s “luckiest man” speech

Friday marks the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s famous “luckiest man on the face of the Earth” speech at Yankee Stadium. To commemorate the anniversary, MLB put together this video with a first baseman from every team in the league reciting a line from Gehrig’s speech. It’s about as well-done as you’d expect. Derek Jeter’s […]
