Rockies turn odd triple play against Padres

In the third inning of the Padres-Rockies game on Sunday, Colorado turned the third triple play in team history – and they did it in usual fashion.

With men on first and second, Carlos Quentin hit a grounder to third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado stepped on the bag for the first out, and threw to second baseman D.J. LeMahieu for the second out. LeMahieu’s throw to Justin Morneau at first was too late to get Quentin for the third out, but Quentin was called out anyway on account of Seth Smith’s slide interfering with LeMahieu at second base.

So officially, it will go down as a 5-4-3 double play…even though Morneau never officially recorded an out at first base. OK then.

Tony La Russa Diamondbacks

Is La Russa the beginning of the end for Towers, Gibson?

Publicly, Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick said a few weeks ago that he was going to give general manager Kevin Towers every chance to succeed. Those comments were made after another April loss, dropping the Diamondbacks to a league-worst 5-17 record. As it turns out, shortly after those comments, Kendrick and team president Derrick Hall […]

Prince Fielder

Should the Rangers sit Prince Fielder more?

Generously listed at 5’11” and 275 pounds, Prince Fielder has never looked like the most durable guy. Despite that, nobody has played in more games since 2006 than him. Fielder’s latest streak — 546 consecutive games played — came to an end Saturday night, when the Rangers held him out of the lineup with a […]

Dugout Digest – making a statement

We all thought that the Marlins were going to fall apart about Jose Fernandez’s Tommy John surgery. And for a moment, they did, losing five straight games on their current eleven-game West Coast road trip, a streak that started with Fernandez’s last start before he hurt his elbow. But the Marlins have rebounded, smashing the […]

Dugout Digest – shutout Friday

Do you like offense? Well, I hope you didn’t watch many games on Friday night – the year of the pitcher continued. Of the 14 games that took place on Friday night, six ended with a goose egg in one team’s run column. Another seven teams scored either one or two runs. That means that […]

‘Million Dollar Arm’ is too bland to be worth your time

Let’s get this out of the way first: Million Dollar Arm is not a great baseball movie. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re likely going to be disappointed. The posters, trailers and commercials for the film make it pretty clear this is a showcase for Jon Hamm, best known for playing Don Draper on […]

The longest homers for the week ending May 15th

We have dingers, yes we do! And this week, we have several new faces – and one that is becoming a staple. 1. C.J. Cron vs J.A. Happ, 468 feet (May 10th) Welcome to the show and the top five for the year, C.J.! It’s something when a guy’s first career homer is a monster […]

Dugout Digest – his first time

In Mike Trout’s fantastic young career, he had somehow never hit a walk off home run. That all changed on Thursday night, when he smashed a Brad Boxberger pitch over the Angels bullpen to hand Anaheim a 6-5 win over the Rays. It’s pretty wild that Mike Trout, best player in all the land, had […]

The best defensive plays for the week ending May 14th

This week was a little light on sterling defense, but here’s what we were able to come up with. There are a couple really great throws featured, which is something you know we love here at TOC. May 9th, Cardinals vs Pirates – Bourjos being Bourjos. Peter Bourjos lost this ball in the lights before […]

Could Josh Reddick and ‘Careless Whisper’ start a trend?

Josh Reddick must have lost a bet, right? That was the only rational explanation for why a major league ballplayer would risk ridicule by choosing Wham!’s “Careless Whisper” as his walk-up music. Of course, maybe we shouldn’t use the word “rational” in association with Reddick, who has previously made interesting choices in beard length and […]

Dugout Digest – don’t freak out yet

I really dislike when people get too wrapped up in early season results. Hell, we just had a column get posted on Tuesday talking about when the right time to give up on playoff hopes is. Since that column has run, the Rays are 2-0, the Indians are 1-1 (and coming off of a 15-4 […]

Bad news for Rangers: Perez and Harrison facing season-ending surgery

The Texas Rangers are having a very bad day. Two key rotation members, Martin Perez and Matt Harrison both were undergoing medical evaluations for their elbow and back, respectively. Both got bad, bad news. Perez had a terrific first month for the Rangers and was a big reason they survived their earlier rotation health issues, […]

Jose Fernandez and the uncertainty of injured young stars

There aren’t many specific baseball dates that I remember from my childhood. I have plenty of baseball memories, of course, and I could go on for hours recounting them. I can’t really peg very many of them to specific dates on the calendar though. As I sit here in 2014, there really are only two […]

On Second Thought: The Marlins/Blue Jays Mega-Trade

After a couple of years where the Toronto Blue Jays were lauded for the moves made by general manager Alex Anthopolous, the biggest feather in his cap came in November of 2012. That was when the Blue Jays, who were supposedly on the cusp of finally making some noise in the AL East, decided to […]

Dugout Digest – free falling

It’s not a good time right now for the New York Yankees. Their rotation is in tatters after C.C. Sabathia became the third starter to go on the DL, and they’ve lost four straight games since. It’s almost funny how this collapse has happened – the Yankees ignored their rotation this winter aside from […]
