Rockies turn odd triple play against Padres

In the third inning of the Padres-Rockies game on Sunday, Colorado turned the third triple play in team history – and they did it in usual fashion.

With men on first and second, Carlos Quentin hit a grounder to third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado stepped on the bag for the first out, and threw to second baseman D.J. LeMahieu for the second out. LeMahieu’s throw to Justin Morneau at first was too late to get Quentin for the third out, but Quentin was called out anyway on account of Seth Smith’s slide interfering with LeMahieu at second base.

So officially, it will go down as a 5-4-3 double play…even though Morneau never officially recorded an out at first base. OK then.
