The losers of WAR: June update

Earlier today, we took a look at the players who were leading the league in WAR to begin the month of June. If we are anything here at The Outside Corner, it is fair and balanced. As such, in the interest of equal time, let’s take a look at the other end of the leaderboard to see […]

The leaders of WAR: June Update

Everyone loves to track the potential award winners throughout the MLB season. MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year get more than their fair share of attention. Overlooked over the years, especially by the BBWAA, is WAR, the stat that actually provides a valuation of each and every player. In order to give WAR […]

Where will Kendrys Morales finally end up?

Draft day draws nigh, an exciting time for fans as they looks to see hopeful stars of the future. The one person that might be most excited for the draft to come and go though is Kendrys Morales as it means he will finally be freed from qualifying offer purgatory. Morales is the last of […]

Miguel Olivo apparently tried to bite Alex Guerrero’s ear off

Here we all were minding our own business on an otherwise uneventful day of baseball news when Jon Morosi casually dropped a bomb on the Twittersphere: WHAT THE WHAT?!?! One can only assume that “displaced” is just fancy talk for part of Guerrero’s ear being partially or completely bitten off by Olivo. Oh, it is […]

Bad news for Rangers: Perez and Harrison facing season-ending surgery

The Texas Rangers are having a very bad day. Two key rotation members, Martin Perez and Matt Harrison both were undergoing medical evaluations for their elbow and back, respectively. Both got bad, bad news. Perez had a terrific first month for the Rangers and was a big reason they survived their earlier rotation health issues, […]

The losers of WAR: May update

Yesterday, we took a look at the players who were leading the league in WAR to begin the month of May. If we are anything here at The Outside Corner, it is fair and balanced. As such, in the interest of equal time, let’s take a look at the other end of the leaderboard to […]

Yankee fans accuse Cano of selling out, break the irony meter

To the surprise of virtually no one, Robinson Cano was greeted by a chorus of boos upon his return to Yankee Stadium for the first time since signing with the Seattle Mariners. That seems like a bit much since Cano didn’t exactly burn bridges on his way out of town, but hey, fans like to boo. However, some fans decided to take things a step further:

If you listen closely enough, you can hear fans chanting “You sold out!” to Cano.

In related news, I regret to inform you that the entire Yankee fan base has perished from an overdose of irony. Somehow, it is lost on those misguided Yankees fans that their team’s primary strategy for building a contending ballclub for the last few decades has been to convince other players to “sell out” and sign with them. This last offseason alone, the Yankees lured Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Masahiro Tanaka to the Bronx entirely based on the fact that they were offering the most money.

Yet Cano leaves town because, for once, the Yankees were not the highest bidder and he is derided as a sell out. Yep, sure, makes sense.

Never stop, Yankees fans. Never stop.

Robinson Cano and the Mariners are struggling and nobody seems to care

The Mariners shocked the baseball world this winter by ponying up $240 million to lure Robinson Cano away from the Yankees. In a perfect world, landing Cano would vault the Mariners into contender status, breathe some life into their perennially moribund offense and give Seattle instant credibility and notoriety. In a more realistic world, Cano’s […]

Things get worse for D’Backs, Mark Trumbo out with stress fracture

The Arizona Diamondbacks have the worst record in the majors and just can’t seem to catch a break. They can, however, catch a fracture. To be precise, they’ve now lost slugger Mark Trumbo for an indefinite period of time to a stress fracture in his left foot: There is no timetable for Trumbo’s return yet, […]

Mike Trout is promoting Marlon Wayans movies, for some reason

When it comes to baseball, Mike Trout is great at just about everything. Sure, you can quibble about his arm strength, but that’s about it. Off the field, however, Trout has a lot of work to do. By all accounts he is a genial, upstanding fellow, but it turns out that he isn’t exactly a […]

Brett Anderson lands on DL, water is wet

It isn’t baseball season until Brett Anderson lands on the disabled list. Sure enough, the Rockies placed him there yesterday due to a broken finger. Anderson suffered the injury while hitting, which just goes to show what a great idea it was for Colorado to acquire the injury-prone pitcher in the first place. He couldn’t […]

The Dodgers have a mascot, but don’t call it a mascot

In their recent homestand, the Dodgers released into the wild an asexual costumed Dodger character to interact with fans. Behold the horror: Most right-minded people would consider this abomination to be a mascot. But don’t you DARE call it a mascot. The Dodgers simply won’t have it. Via Steve Dilbeck of the LA Times: “It’s […]

Slow down the Marlins hype machine

The Marlins are the hottest team in baseball! It is the feelgood story of the early season, assuming you can be willfully ignorant of the prominent involvement of Jeffrey Loria and his acolyte David Samson. They are a team brimming with young talent and look as if they might be ready to have that talent […]

Yasiel Puig benched for being late, world doesn’t end

A member of a MLB team showed up 20 minutes late for practice today and was benched as punishment. For 99.9% of ballplayers, this would be a blip on the radar. Reporters would tweet the news or include it in pre-game notes. The world would move on, scarcely noticing it. Oh, it was Yasiel Puig? […]
