Dugout Digest – big time Timmy Jim steps up

Tim Lincecum’s second no-hitter against the Padres on Wednesday was big for the Giants for a couple of reasons. First off, the Giants have been sliding as of late – heading into Wednesday’s game, they were just 3-11 over their past two-plus weeks. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have been on fire, and after winning again on […]

Josh Reddick reaches behind Mets fan to catch foul ball

During Wednesday’s Athletics-Mets game at Citi Field, Josh Reddick made a great catch on a foul pop-up…and he had to avoid a fan to even snag the ball.

There really was no reason for the fan to move – if the ball is out of play, it’s fair game for the fans. And Eric Young Jr. was batting – not an Oakland hitter. Reddick actually did him a favor though. Do you see the way this fan was holding his phone trying to make the catch? If he actually did catch it, he would have his hands full of a shattered phone, and nobody wants that.

Ian Desmond was offended that Carlos Gomez slid hard into second

Here’s your bit of stupidity for the day – in the bottom of the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game between Washington and Milwaukee, benches cleared after Ian Desmond took exception with a hard slide into second base by Carlos Gomez. The funny thing was that Desmond wasn’t even in the vicinity of Gomez’s slide, as […]

Brewers fan dives onto dugout to catch foul ball

During Wednesday’s Nationals-Brewers game, an overzealous Brewers fan reached out and dove onto the team’s dugout to grab a foul ball off the bat of Martin Maldonado. Check it out.

He *really* wanted that ball. Did anyone tell him that the Brewers catcher who hit it *wasn’t* NL MVP candidate Jonathan Lucroy?

Tim Lincecum no-hits Padres for the second time in his career

We’re now up to three no-hitters during the 2014 season. On Wednesday, Tim Lincecum tossed his second career no-hitter against the San Diego Padres as the Giants won 4-0. This no-hitter was a little easier for Lincecum than his first one against the Padres, when he threw 148 pitches at Petco Park last season. This […]

The best defensive plays for the week ending June 24th

Welcome to this edition of the best defensive plays of the week, now coming at you every Wednesday. June 19th, Reds vs Pirates – Billy Hamilton gets some air. Before the season, there were questions as to whether or not Billy Hamilton could adequately play center field. This year, he’s turned himself into a pretty […]

Evan Longoria jumps into crowd after making great catch

Check out this sequence of events during Evan Longoria’s wonderful catch in the third inning of today’s Pirates-Rays game

So, to recap…

-Longoria runs from his position at third base to the on-field bullpens halfway up the left field line
-He runs over one of the mounds in the bullpen to make the catch
-He hangs on to the ball as he’s about to hit the fence
-He jumps on top of, and then over, the fence while holding the ball

Got all that? The man is a wizard with the glove.

Trade rumors have put David Price in a bad mood

“Obviously I think about it; it’s why I’ve been in a bad mood for the past week and a half. It’s nothing I really want to talk about. … I don’t know where I’m going, I don’t know when I’m going, so there’s nothing really I have to comment on.”

Joe West gets hit by line drive, flexes

During Tuesday’s Athletics-Mets game at Citi Field, Stephen Vogt smashed a line drive that ended up hitting first base umpire Joe West. Don’t worry though – he was fine.

Oh wow, this is hilarious. The big smile and the flex? Too much.

Colby Lewis, Rangers disappointed in Ian Kinsler

“It’s unfortunate, I feel like it’s unfortunate but that’s just me. I’m not going to sit here and bad-mouth Kins, I really enjoyed Kins and I enjoyed my time playing with him and I enjoyed him as a teammate; disappointed, that’s the word. That’s all. I love Kins, that’s all. I was just disappointed a little bit, that’s all.”

“I know where his aspect of things is. He feels the way he felt maybe how things went down, I have no idea. It’s his opinion, it’s how things transpired. He’s got his view on it, I’m sure. Like I said, I’m taking it as if he was just disappointment in that aspect of things [on the home run gesture] and not with me.”

Dugout Digest – the Dodgers are rising

This is probably going to make Giants fans ill, but the blue moon is rising once again in the NL West. The Los Angeles Dodgers are now just three games behind the San Francisco Giants, and their +40 run differential has actually eclipsed San Francisco’s +38 mark. Since the Giants topped out at 42-21 on […]

Phillies fans give the returning Tony Gwynn Jr. a standing ovation

Philadelphia sports fans get a bad wrap for a number of reasons. But on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park, they showed their passion in a completely different way to Tony Gwynn Jr., making his first plate appearance since his father passed away.

I got chills watching that scene unfold. And hey, great job by Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and home plate umpire David Rackley for letting the moment breathe and letting the Phillies faithful give Gwynn his deserved ovation by stalling for time. Moments like this are why I love baseball so much.

17-year old girl dominates Rays in batting practice with knuckleball

This is 17-year old Chelsea Baker, a pitcher for Durant High School’s baseball team. On Monday, she became the youngest woman ever to throw major league batting practice. And she more than held her own against the Rays. Check this out.

That knuckleball is just gross. She made Evan Longoria look like a fool with that pitch!

With the way the Rays are playing this season, Baker could probably be slotted into their bullpen and immediately be one of the best pitchers out there.
