During his career, Rick Porcello has almost been thought as a disappointment. This is a guy who was a first round pick out of high school in 2007, and made his major league debut in 2009 at age 20. His rookie year ERA was 3.96, and that has been his career best up until this […]

With the month of June behind us, we’re now three months of the way through the 2014 MLB season. I think that by this point, we’ve realized which players and teams are good, and which are…well, not so good. I don’t think any of the names you’re going to see on this month’s edition of […]
When ask to characterize his first season in the Bronx, here’s what Yankees catcher Brian McCann had to say about himself.
“Horrible. Hitting — you know, I feel good behind the plate. But swinging the bat, I need to get better.”
McCann also spoke about the pressure he’s putting on himself.
“It’s putting a lot. Myself — I’m a big reason for that. Our pitching staff has been amazing. It’s the big reason why we’re at where we’re at.”

The Cubs have a pitcher this year that they might actually build around, and not just trade the moment a team offers them warm body – Jake Arrieta. His 1.81 ERA leads the team and (although he’s not qualified for the ERA title thanks to him only making 11 starts this season) is the lowest […]

This week, we actually had an abundance of walk off wins…we’re in the golden age now, gang. Unfortunately, there weren’t exactly many game-winning homers getting blasted into the the sky, but we’ll have to make do for now. June 23rd, White Sox vs Orioles And of course, we start with that walk off homer – […]

I know we’re just over the halfway point of the season, but the Wild Card races in both leagues are going to be bonkers. In the National League. The top Wild Card is jointly held by the Giants and Dodgers, who are tied for the NL West lead. Then…there’s the second spot. The Reds, Nationals, […]

Both the Braves and Nationals had a chance to gain ground on the other on Saturday. Each team had a doubleheader against a less than solid NL team – the Braves took on the Phillies, while the Nationals battled the Cubs. At the end of the day when all the smoke had cleared and all […]

In your minor league quirk post of the day, the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League threw no-hitters in back to back games. Lynchburg, the high-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, allowed zero hits to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, a Royals affiliate, on both Thursday and Friday. Thursday’s game was started by Lucas Sims, Atlanta’s […]

Alright everyone, we can go ahead and shut the MLB season down – we have our first team with 50 wins, and it’s the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee’s season has been a shocker, but you can boil that success down to one word – health. Last year, 12 different pitchers started games for Milwaukee. This year, […]

On Friday night at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mike Trout did something pornographic to a baseball.
ESPN is calling it at 489 feet, which would be the longest hit in the majors since Giancarlo Stanton hit a 494 foot bomb in 2012. If that number seems a little off to you, it’s been confirmed by ESPN’s Hit Tracker, which is what we use every week for our longest homers of the week feature (and you’ll be seeing this hoer by Trout in next week’s edition).
This homer by Trout is such a massive blast. It cleared the batter’s eye in center field, which is a good 30 or so feet high and more than 410 feet from home plate. Yeah…let’s go ahead and put this in our ledger as the longest homer of the first half (even with a couple of weeks left), and possibly, the longest homer of the 2014 season.

During Friday night’s Braves-Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies are doing something cool. Their three-man broadcast booth of Tom McCarthy, Jamie Moyer, and Matt Stairs is stationed in the center field seats for the evening. Where the broadcasters are located is in firing range for home run balls, and that’s exactly what happened in the first inning when Freddie Freeman smashed a three-run bomb off of Kyle Kendrick.
The home run ball was caught (with one hand, mind you) by McCarthy, who then gave in to the wishes of the Phillie faithful and threw the ball back onto the field. I normally hate when fans throw home run balls back, but this was a thing of beauty.

Last week was kind of a disappointing week – there wasn’t that one blast that really wowed us all. This week, though, we’ve got at least one that’ll make your eyes pop out of your head. 1. George Springer vs Aaron Harang, 465 feet (June 24th) This homer doesn’t seem like much of anything…until you […]

I never expected…*this* from the Texas Rangers. Texas has the third-worst record in the American League, better than just the Rays and (barely) the Astros. I know the team has been completely destroyed with injuries, but the bottom never really fell out until this eight game losing streak has pushed them eight games under .500. […]

The Milwaukee Brewers have been on a tear with viral videos this season, and the latest one is a tribute to Will Smith, starring…Milwaukee reliever Will Smith and the rest of the Brewers bullpen in a mashup of various Will Smith songs.
I almost want the Brewers to keep playing well just so we can keep getting more videos like this. These are phenomenal.
