Blue Jays ban beer cans from upper deck level after Game 5 fiasco

Toronto Blue Jays fans embarrassed themselves at the Rogers Centre when they littered the field with beer cans and garbage following a call that didn’t go their way in Game 5 against the Texas Rangers. The game was delayed, a baby was sprayed by an errant beer can, and the Blue Jays had to issue a reminder mid-game during the game asking fans to stop. It was a disaster.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweeted today the Blue Jays are taking action against idiots by adjusting their beer policy. During Game 3 of the ALCS, the team won’t be selling beer cans to fans in the 500 level (upper deck) and beers will be poured in plastic cups instead.

On one hand, it seems kind of unfair to single out fans in the higher levels, as it wasn’t only them who were throwing cans onto the field. However, they sit in the highest, most-rowdy area, where fans are often liquored up. When they throw cans onto the field, they have the mostly likely chance to hit someone below them. So while it may seem discriminatory to those who sit in the cheaper seats, the move is more than appropriate. I’ve sat in the 500 section before, and not to lump all fans who sit up there together, but it’s a gong-show. Giving them plastic cups at least limits damage, god forbid fans decide to throw things again. Although, it would be make more sense to just stop selling cans altogether, but I’m sure that’s easier said than done.

Either way, hopefully fans learn that throwing anything on the field is unacceptable at any point during a sporting event. Getting rid of cans in the 500 level shouldn’t be a necessary move to make, but unfortunately at this point it’s totally justified. Hopefully no plastic cups are thrown tonight.
