When I think about minor league baseball, wacky promotions and mascots are some of the first things that come to mind. When I think about the ideal mascot for a team called the Reading Fightin' Phils I think of… an ostrich. Wait, what?
Actually, check, that make it two ostriches. Two live female ostriches to be exact. Since I can't begin to get my head around why the Fightin Phils are doing this, I'll let them explain:
Berks County ranks third in the United States and first in the state for farmland preservation and the ostrich duo will help draw attention to the county's leading industry.
Alright, if you say so. I still don't get what ostriches have to do with it, but I've never been to Berks County. Personally, I'd have rather seen this minor league affiliate of the Phillies use an albatross if they insist on having a bird as their mascot. Actually, that might be redundant since the big league club already has one named Ryan Howards' contract.
Oh! That reminds me. You can help the Reading name the ostriches as part of a contest the team is conducting.
