Dugout Digest: Shin-Soo Choo Has the Worst Hangover Ever

DugoutDigest

According to Shin-Soo Choo, he is suffering from the worst hangover mankind has ever seen.

Choo was asked yesterday about his struggles this season and Choo made the surprising admission that he felt his May 2nd DUI arrest was affecting his game, causing him to think too much and be too hard on himself.

On one hand, I applaud Choo for being so forthcoming and taking full responsibility for his actions when he made the drunken mistake over a month ago.

On the other hand, I totally call BS!

Choo is right, his May numbers were not good with a slash line of .247/.336/.344 and June isn’t shaping up much better with him off to a 2-for-14 start.  That definitely anywhere close to his normal production and one certainly couldn’t blame him if he was suffering some kind of mental anguish after his public shaming.  Ballplayers have gone through a lot less and seen their performances struggle.  What his excuse doesn’t explain though was that he pretty much sucked BEFORE he got arrested too.

Unless Choo can see the future, his DUI arrest shouldn’t have had any impact on his .250/.325/.400 slash line in April.  Not be hard on the guy, but there is clearly something more going on with him than just a little bit of overthinking.  Really, the DUI just provides him with a convenient cover for having a bad season and for him to hide behind it, whether he realizes he’s doing it or not, risks distracting from the real problem.

Also last night: Pujols hits another walk-off bomb and causes Big Z to explode…  Duensing dominates the RoyalsRyan Vogelsong’s comeback continues.

What to watch tonight: OK, maybe this won’t be worth watching intently, but the Rockies-Padres game features the first starting pitching matchup between Clayton (Mortensen and Richard) that I can remember. Full schedule with probable pitchers here.
