As exciting as it was for the Tigers to get David Price at the trade deadline, there was something of a pause among Detroit fans when Austin Jackson was revealed to be part of the deal. Sure, some of that was fan affection, but the concern was that losing Jackson’s glove in center field could become an issue.
One of the replacements for Jackson will be Ezequiel Carrera, freshly called up from Triple-A Toledo. In his Tigers debut Monday night against the Yankees (nationally televised on ESPN), Carrera let everyone know that the position will be covered defensively.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Detroit’s new center fielder made a diving, over-the-shoulder catch that robbed Jacoby Ellsbury of extra bases and probably saved two runs.
And if you weren’t sure that was a great catch just by seeing the video of it, maybe Derek Jeter’s reaction to the play will convince you.
