Tony Gwynn Jr. of the Philadelphia Phillies

Tony Gwynn Jr. got a great ovation in San Diego

Tony Gwynn Jr. lead off and played center field for the Phillies on Tuesday night. The Phillies were playing the Padres in San Diego at Petco Park. You can imagine what happened from there.

Gwynn’s father, Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, passed away in June following a battle with salivary cancer. This was his son’s first game in San Diego he passed away. What a fantastic gesture by Padres fans, making the son of their favored hero feel welcome. Also, notice how Rene Rivera gave Gwynn a supportive bump on the arm as he dug in at the dish.

Hey San Diego – you stay classy.
