I can’t recall ever seeing something like this happen before. In the sixth inning of Thursday’s Cardinals-Pirates game, Edinson Volquez popped up a bunt. Matt Carpenter let the bunt drop in, attempting to turn one out into two. He threw to second in an attempt to get the force on Jordy Mercer, but no one was there. However, center fielder Jon Jay was playing shallow and backing the play up, grabbed the ball, and ran it in to second base to get the force on Mercer.
Yep – that’s a 5-8 putout, something you don’t see every day. It ended up not making much difference though, as the Pirates still plated four runs in the inning.
