A San Diego brewery is creating a Tony Gwynn tribute beer

Late San Diego legend Tony Gwynn will be immortalized in beer form. Alesmith Brewing Company out of San Diego will be releasing San Diego .394 Pale Ale, which will feature Gwynn’s likeness on the packaging and is colored in old school, 1980s Padres colors. The .394 in the title was Gwynn’s batting average during the strike-shortened 1994 season.

The name “394” (.394) references the highest single-season batting average Gwynn set back in 1994. Ready to be released at the June 6th Padres Beerfest, San Diego Pale Ale 394 will reflect the commitment to excellence shared by the legendary Tony Gwynn and the AleSmith team.

Tony Gwynn Jr. and family will honor Mr. Tony Gwynn in the Alesmith tap room on November 16th. Only 119 packs will be available for the “pre-launch” release, with more to ship out soon after.

As someone who’s had quite a few Alesmith beers, I can vouch for their quality. This isn’t a perfect tribute to Gwynn, but if you’re going to create a beer to honor Gwynn, you couldn’t do any better than this name and packaging.
