Retiring White Sox star Paul Konerko

Paul Konerko thanks White Sox fans before he retires

You may have missed it among the endless parade of Derek Jeter ceremonies, but Paul Konerko is also retiring after the 2014 season. Konerko thanked White Sox fans in this tremendous video recapping his excellent career on the South Side.

In 16 seasons with the White Sox, Konerko hit .281/.357/.491 with 432 homers. He was a six-time All-Star, and received MVP votes in five different seasons. The White Sox won three AL Central titles with Konerko on the squad, and captured the 2005 World Series – their first championship since 1917.

Yeah, Paul Konerko isn’t a Hall of Famer. But he was a damn good player, and he meant a lot to a franchise and a city. I’d expect to see his #14 hanging at US Cellular Field sooner rather than later.
