The Padres were reported to be deciding between Pittsburgh Pirates third base coach Rick Sofield and former Minnesota Twins skipper Ron Gardenhire as the club’s new manager, so this move comes completely out of left field.
The 38-year-old was the Diamondbacks third base coach last season and was a manager in Arizona’s system from 2011-14. Green was named the Southern League’s 2013 Manager of the Year, so he doesn’t lack experience, he just hasn’t managed at the Major League level yet.
With heavier expectations following a bevy of offseason moves, the Padres were a disaster last season finishing with a 74-88 record. General Manager A.J. Preller definitely isn’t taking the safe route with this hiring, and he’s likely hoping he’s just brought on an up-and-comer who can turn the Padres fortunes around.
