It didn’t get much attention at the time, but Jayson Werth was busted for driving 105 MPH back in July. On the spectrum of athlete criminal offenses, driving too fast isn’t one that gets a whole lot of attention, especially lately. However, it is getting more attention now because Werth was convicted on charges of reckless driving today and will be going to jail:

In a time where Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson have committed acts of violence and were sentenced to no jail time, this sentence is certainly… interesting. From a baseball perspective, there doesn’t figure to be much impact as one assumes Werth will do his time in the pokey this offseason. The suspended nature of the sentence, however, does mean that he could find his way back behind bars if he doesn’t keep his nose clean going forward.
Surely this conviction will lead to many a newspaper columnist to write scathing takedowns of Werth for his selfish and reckless behavior which clearly makes him a distraction and a bad teammate.
What’s that?
That only applies to Yasiel Puig? Even if Werth was busted for the exact same thing that got everyone in an uproar over Puig?
Hmm, that’s a weird double standard. I wonder what is so different about them to cause that. I can’t quite place my finger on it.
