Jake Peavy is heading to the Giants

The San Francisco Giants have jumped into the trade market, acquiring Jake Peavy from the Boston Red Sox.

Peavy has a 4.72 ERA in 124 innings this season with the Red Sox. Since posting a 2.87 ERA in April, Peavy has a 5.34 ERA and hasn’t won a game (if you care about such things) since April 25th.

In return, Boston receives Giants minor league pitchers Edwin Escobar and Heath Hembree.

Escobar is a 22-year old that has a 5.11 ERA with AAA Fresno this season, striking out 96 and walking 37 in 111 innings. Last season, split between high-A San Jose and AA Connecticut, he had a 2.78 ERA in 128 2/3 innings to go along with 146 strikeouts and 30 walks. Hembree is a 25-year old that has a 3.89 ERA out of the bullpen for Fresno this season, striking out 46 and walking 13 in 39 1/3 innings. In 7 2/3 major league innings last season, Hembree struck out 12, walked two, and didn’t allow a run.

Both Escobar and Hembree ranked among the club’s top ten prospects this season, and Escobar was almost unanimously the second-best prospect in the organization behind Kyle Crick.
