Don Mattingly will start Clayton Kershaw in Game 4 on short rest

Game 3 hasn’t even started yet, and Don Mattingly is going all-in. The Dodgers will start Clayton Kershaw on three days rest in Game 4 of the NLDS on Tuesday before going with Zack Greinke on regular rest in a potential Game 5.

Ballsy? Yes, very, especially after Kershaw allowed eight runs over 6 2/3 innings in the Dodgers’ 10-9 Game 1 loss. You might question the wisdom of Mattingly starting his ace on short rest, but if the Dodgers lose tonight to go down 2-1, don’t you want to go out swinging with your ace instead of Dan Haren?

If the Dodgers lose Game 4, whether or not they lose Game 3, Mattingly will be questioned from here to Mars. If they win, he’ll be lauded. Talk about a gamble.
