Denard Span will likely start the year on the DL

Jayson Werth is still recovering from shoulder surgery. Nate McLouth is still limited from shoulder surgery last year. And now, Denard Span will likely end up starting the year on the DL for the Washington Nationals because of surgery to repair a core muscle.

It’ll be four to six weeks before Span can even participate in baseball activities, truly putting his Opening Day availability in doubt.

If both Span and Werth aren’t ready for Opening Day, the Nationals are likely looking an outfield of Bryce Harper, McLouth, and Michael Taylor.

If McLouth isn’t ready either, Washington is truly looking at the possibility of having to start Jeff Kobernus, Kevin Frandsen, or non-roster invitee Tony Gwynn Jr. in their outfield on Opening Day alongside Harper and Taylor.

Needless to say…this isn’t an ideal situation. When your outfield goes five deep, you can withstand one or two injuries. But three? Things start getting dicey.
