Giancarlo Stanton will be wearing a cage on his helmet this year after he was plunked in cringe-inducing fashion last September. But Stanton’s cage isn’t any normal face guard – it’s customized for him, with a slick “G” built into the design. Check it out.

According to the Miami Herald, Stanton’s helmet was manufactured by Schutt Sports, who typically are in the football helmet business. The cage is made of carbon steel, and can withstand a 100 mph fastball, hopefully preventing a repeat of September’s incident.
In addition to being a slick design, the cage is functional – Stanton made sure to see the cage getting hit by fastballs without breaking, and also made sure that a ball couldn’t fit through the cage. I wouldn’t be surprised if more players ended up going with a design like this – it really looks quite functional.
