Brewers pitcher Will Smith ejected after foreign substance is spotted on arm

In the seventh inning of Thursday’s Brewers-Braves, Milwaukee reliever Will Smith was ejected in the seventh inning after Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez spotted a foreign substance on Smith’s arm. The umpiring crew conferred, noticed the substance on Smith, and booted him from the game.

Smith’s infraction wasn’t nearly as blatant as Michael Pineda’s violation last year, in which Pineda had a hilariously large glob of pine tar on his neck. Nevertheless, Smith will likely end up earning a suspension from this incident as well.

It would actually get *worse* for the Brewers after Smith’s ejection – Neal Cotts replaced him and allowed an RBI single to Jace Peterson to extend Atlanta’s lead to 3-1. Michael Blazek replaced Cotts, and proceeded to allow the next four runners to score, making it an 8-1 game.

After the game, Smith admitted it was a sunscreen/rosin combination that he forgot to wipe off prior to taking the hell, which was the source of controversy involving Clay Buchholz two years ago.
