Anthony Rizzo thinks the Cubs will win the 2015 World Series

Apparently, Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo isn’t aware of what showing a ridiculous amount of confidence can to do an annually tortured fanbase like that of the Cubs.

Speaking at a stop on the Cubs caravan on Thursday, Rizzo expressed optimism about the Cubs not only winning the NL Central in 2015, but also winning the World Series. Via ESPN Chicago

“It’s going to happen this year,” Rizzo said at a Cubs caravan stop at Jacob Beidler Elementary School in Chicago. “It’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to play and we’re going to win the NL Central, you can quote me on that. We should be the team, with all due respect to every other team, we’re going to do some things this year. That’s what we’re going to put our sights on and we’re not going to accept anything else.

“It (winning the World Series) will be fun. Once we do, we’re going to figure out how we’re going to do it again. That’s a long ways away. That’s 9 or 10 months away. Right now we’re focused on the convention, then spring training, and becoming a team and going from there.”

I’m all for showing confidence. After all, I’m a Baltimore Ravens fan, and I gritted my teeth when Joe Flacco was roundly mocked after calling himself the best quarterback in the NFL six months before leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl win.

But if you’re a player on the Cubs…man, maybe don’t tempt fate? Anthony, I know you mean well, but all you’re doing is getting these fans’ hopes up again before they inevitably get destroyed in soul crushing fashion.
