Three key questions for the Baltimore Orioles

Orioles fans probably have a lot of questions about their team going into the 2014 season. Can they break through to the promised land once again? Will Buck Showalter’s magic continue for another season? Will the Orioles struggle without closer Jim Johnson in the fold? All of these questions are worthy of being asked, but […]

The two biggest weaknesses of the Baltimore Orioles

There’s not too much to say about the Baltimore Orioles – their offseason activity was non-existent until late in the winter, when they made two of the best signings of any team by inking both Nelson Cruz and Ubaldo Jimenez to below market deals. But adding that pair of players to a young core that […]

Kris Medlen, Jarrod Parker will each require a second Tommy John surgery

The news is not good for the 2013 NL East Champion Atlanta Braves and the 2013 AL West Champion Oakland Athletics – each team is losing one of their most valuable pitchers from last season to the same injury. Both Kris Medlen and Jarrod Parker will miss the 2014 season because of Tommy John surgery, […]

2014 Season Preview: Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles head into the 2014 season as a bit of an enigma in the American League East. With a top notch offense, with more power than any other team in the Major Leagues, and an absolutely fantastic defense club, one would imagine that the O’s would be near the top of the AL […]

Dugout Digest – welcome to Orioles Day

Next up in our season preview series…the Baltimore Orioles, who followed up a playoff berth in 2012 with a respectable, yet disappointing, 85 win season in 2013. The Orioles had one of those offseasons that started off really slow, but blossomed later on as prices began to fall. Can Baltimore once again reach the […]

Video: Sydney Cricket Ground converted to baseball diamond

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks took off for Australia last night, embarking on a 15-hour flight across the Pacific Ocean. Once they get over the jet lag, they’ll be playing the series at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. Obviously, a lot of work goes into turning a cricket pitch into a baseball diamond. Just take a look at this time lapse of the project, taking place over 16 days:

Other than foul territory that makes the Coliseum in Oakland seem small, the dimensions will be fairly normal — walls are set at 328 feet down the lines and 400 feet to dead center. With sellouts expected, 45,000 Aussies will be packing the stands for the first Major League Baseball game there in 100 years. Sydney is the fourth international city to host a season-opening series, joining Monterrey, San Juan and Tokyo.

If you’re looking to get up early on Saturday, first pitch for Game 1 is at 4 a.m. Eastern time. Game 2 starts Saturday night at 10 p.m. Eastern time.

The four horsemen of the Toronto Blue Jays

Some of you might take issue with who comprises the Blue Jays’ “four horsemen.” For instance, Edwin Encarnacion is not on this list. How can that be? He hit 36 home runs with 104 RBI, ranking among the AL’s top five hitters with a .904 OPS. All right, but Toronto still won only 74 games […]

Three key questions for the Toronto Blue Jays

We’ve covered the Blue Jays’ shortcomings in the starting rotation and at second base, as well as the many injuries the team has had to deal with in recent seasons. Those are likely the biggest questions that hang over Toronto going into the 2014 season. However, with much of the same roster on hand as […]

The two biggest weaknesses of the Toronto Blue Jays

When Ervin Santana signed with the Braves, more attention seemed to focus on the Blue Jays losing out on him. Toronto had a big need for starting pitching especially at the back end of its rotation and Santana could be had for a one-year contract. Losing a first-round draft pick wasn’t even a concern because […]

2014 Season Preview: Toronto Blue Jays

Remember last year, when the Blue Jays were a trendy World Series pick after general manager Alex Anthopoulos’ offseason overhaul? That seems like a very long time ago. Injuries prevented Toronto from fulfilling those great expectations and have raised serious doubts about the team’s capability of contending this season, despite returning much of the same […]

Dugout Digest – welcome to Blue Jays Day

Alright guys, we’ve entered the final week of season previews, and this week, we’ll be focusing on the best division in baseball – the American League East. The AL East jamboree begins today with the Toronto Blue Jays, who had a heavily hyped offseason in 2012 only to fall flat on their collective face in […]

The Four Horsemen of the St. Louis Cardinals

With a team as well-rounded as the Cardinals, it’s actually a bit of a challenge to pick out just four guys who will have a significant impact on the 2014 season. Sure, there are MVP and Cy Young candidates, but there’s also established veterans playing important roles and a new wave of talent that’s starting […]

Three Key Questions for the St. Louis Cardinals

While everyone expects the Cardinals to have a playoff spot pretty much locked in, there are still a few questions that are left to be answered. For some teams, the questions asked here are big ones, involving things that may make or break a season. For St. Louis, these are more “hey, wouldn’t it be […]
