Carlos Santana will be Cleveland’s Opening Day third baseman

“Carlos is going to play third,” Francona said Tuesday. “To be honest with you, I don’t have a crystal ball. I’m not sure you really need to have one. Things happen. I think, at the beginning of Spring Training, I said I thought we could be the best team with Carlos and Lonnie. I’m not exactly sure how that’s going to play itself out. I don’t know if anybody really is [sure].

“I’d rather not commit to something [that could change]. I think Carlos has done an outstanding job of not only showing us that he can play third, but having the ability to catch a Major League ballgame at the same time. I think that’s a phenomenal skill-set.”

Dugout Digest – t-minus five days

Let’s go ahead and take another page off the calendar – we are now just five days from Opening Day, and the league is starting to get busy making roster decisions. Yu Darvish won’t start for the Rangers on Opening Day. Neftali Feliz is starting the year in AAA. It’s getting a little wild out […]

Neftali Feliz will start the year in AAA

“We optioned Neftali with the goal of working with him to get back to where we all know he can be,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said in a statement.  “He’s healthy and his work ethic has been solid, but he needs some work and the best place to get him that is in Round Rock right now.  I expect he’ll be back as soon as he’s ready to help us.”

-Rangers GM Jon Daniels explains the decision to start 2010 AL Rookie of the Year Neftali Feliz with AAA Round Rock as opposed to the majors. Feliz only threw 4 2/3 innings in the majors in 2013 following Tommy John surgery in August of 2012.

Jason Heyward homers over a scoreboard

This monstrous homer is just gross, and happened on Tuesday at Joker Marchant Stadium. Jason Heyward, most powerful leadoff hitter in the game. No word yet on how much this bomb damaged Rick Porcello’s ego. And check out Torii Hunter’s reaction in right field – he didn’t even bother turning around! He just bent over and picked up some grass as the ball flew out of the park.

Four players that are talented, but overshadowed on their teams

I don’t like the term “breakout campaign”.  When used in baseball terms it usually refers to a player that was already good and had already seen success at previous levels and now had the numbers to match the skill set.  Most of the time, these breakout players were already somewhat well regarded.  For example, in […]

Yu Darvish will not start on Opening Day

“I knew I wasn’t going to be ready for opening day so I made this decision,” Darvish said through an interpreter. “I didn’t want to burden the team so I made the decision now.”

“If it was a shoulder or an elbow, it would be really different,” Darvish added. “I don’t know what to feel. It is what it is.”

Ten players set for a step back in 2014

When you go into a new season, so many people focus on players that are primed for a breakout. And sure enough, we will be too this week. But today, we’re going down the negative route. Which players that had great years in 2013 seem all set for a step backwards in 2014? A.J. Burnett, […]

The Twins pranked Mike Pelfrey heading into the NCAA Tournament

Minnesota Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey is a proud Wichita State alum, and before their brief run in the NCAA Tournament last week, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire called Pelfrey into his office under the guise of “calling the team to pump them up”. The only problem was that Pelfrey wasn’t talking to the Shockers – he was talking to his teammates in the Twins clubhouse. Here’s hoping that Pelfrey and the Twins have a better finish to their season than Wichita State, who lost to eighth-seeded Kentucky in the round of 32 on Sunday.

Dugout Digest – t-minus six days

The “Opening Day” countdown is now under one week. Get hyped, folks. Our final preview week will roll right along today, and if yesterday is any indication, there will be some on the field news as well. Yesterday, we saw the Tigers trade for Alex Gonzalez, the White Sox give Jose Quintana a five-year extension, […]

Jose Quintana gets five-year extension from White Sox

Nearly one week after pitcher Jose Quintana posted one of the worst lines you’ll see in a spring training game, the left-hander and the Chicago White Sox agreed to a five-year contract extension worth up to $26.5 million. Quintana’s Cactus League performance had raised some eyebrows. Most alarming was his outing on March 18, during […]

The AL West limps into 2014

The American League West may be the most wide-open division in baseball this season, partly because of talent, and also partly because of injury.  It’s widely anticipated that at least one, if not both of the wild-cards may come out of the West this season, but each of the expected contenders find themselves beginning the […]
