Tuesday night was *not* a good night for MLB teams in the northeast. Rain wiped out four games on the evening, from Detroit to New York. One of those games will be made up today, as the Yankees and Cubs will be playing a day/night doubleheader. We’ll see about the rest, but if there’s one […]

One of the greatest collisions of baseball and pop culture occurred when Keith Hernandez appeared on Seinfeld in 1992. The former Mets first baseman was a guest-star on a one-hour episode titled “The Boyfriend,” in which Jerry meets Hernandez and the two strike up a friendship (fueled by Seinfeld’s man-crush). To commemorate the 25th anniversary […]

Making certain plays more complicated or telling fans that what they think is an out — and has always been an out for as long as we’ve watched the game — probably isn’t what MLB had in mind when implementing a wider version of instant replay this year. Yet two weeks into the 2014 season, […]

This was a great week for exciting games, but not really a great week for walk off wins. At any rate, here’s your list of this week’s most exciting walk offs. April 8th, Tigers vs Dodgers – taking it back a few years. Carl Crawford wins the game for the Dodgers by doubling in Chone […]

Add another young arm to the list of those claimed by Tommy John surgery — Tampa Bay’s Matt Moore confirmed Monday night that he’ll be going under the knife to repair his partially torn UCL. Moore tried to throw Monday afternoon, and while the ligament isn’t completely torn, it was pretty clear he couldn’t continue […]

While it’s not your Game of the Night from yesterday, last night’s Pirates-Reds game was crazy. The game was suspended due to rain after just six innings, tied at seven. The teams combined for ten homers, and

The pre-arbitration extensions for young stars keep on coming. The latest young player to opt for security over maximized earnings: San Diego second baseman Jedd Gyorko. Gyorko’s deal is for 6 years and will pay him $35 million, with a $13 million option for a 7th year. The deal starts this year, covers what would […]

It isn’t baseball season until Brett Anderson lands on the disabled list. Sure enough, the Rockies placed him there yesterday due to a broken finger. Anderson suffered the injury while hitting, which just goes to show what a great idea it was for Colorado to acquire the injury-prone pitcher in the first place. He couldn’t […]

If the first week of the season is the week where replay got off to a good start, the second week of the season is the week where replay turned into an absolute mess. There was lots of slop when it came to replay this week, and cries for the system to be overhauled are […]
“We felt that it was clear that the replay was inconclusive, and the frustrating part is that when this was rolled out and explained to us, particularly on the throw received by the first baseman, we were instructed when the ball enters the glove — and not that it has to hit the back of the glove — is where the out is deemed complete.”
“At the same time, any angle that we looked at, we couldn’t tell whether [Cervelli’s] foot was on the bag behind Mike Napoli’s leg, so where this became conclusive is a hard pill to swallow. And on the heels of yesterday, it’s hard to have any faith in the system, to be honest with you.”
“There’s going be a learning curve. But again you’d think a video replay would be conclusive or there are plays where it would not be conclusive, which was tonight. We ended up on the wrong side both times.”
“As much as they’re trying to help the human element, it seems like it’s added the human element at a different level.”

I apologize for that awful pun in the title, but it’s a homage to my recently-retired friend and former TOC contributor Mark Smith. Anyway, how ’bout the Milwaukee Brewers? Since losing two out of three games to the Braves at Miller Park to start the season, the Brewers have won nine straight games, sweeping series […]

Just a day after dominating the Reds en route to a 2-1 Rays win, Alex Cobb has been placed on the disabled list due to an oblique strain. Cobb joins fellow Rays starters Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore on the DL, meaning that the only members of Tampa Bay’s projected preseason rotation that are still […]

During Saturday night’s Nationals-Braves game, Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman broke his thumb on a pickoff play at second base. He’ll be out four to six weeks, and while the injury is a tough loss for the Nationals, it may end up helping them delay a decision that appears to be inevitable. Last week, Washington […]

MLB veteran Jeff Francoeur is now a member of the Padres AAA affiliate, the El Paso Chihuahuas. Francoeur’s El Paso teammates decided to concoct an elaborate prank, creating the illusion that teammate Jorge Reyes was deaf. Of course, Franceour bought into the prank hook, line, and sinker, and believed Reyes was deaf for an entire month before the big reveal. This is just hilarious stuff, and the pranking bar has been raise to another level.
