Dugout Digest – brewing up a stout record

I apologize for that awful pun in the title, but it’s a homage to my recently-retired friend and former TOC contributor Mark Smith. Anyway, how ’bout the Milwaukee Brewers? Since losing two out of three games to the Braves at Miller Park to start the season, the Brewers have won nine straight games, sweeping series […]

Alex Cobb’s latest DL stint will force Rays to get creative

Just a day after dominating the Reds en route to a 2-1 Rays win, Alex Cobb has been placed on the disabled list due to an oblique strain. Cobb joins fellow Rays starters Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore on the DL, meaning that the only members of Tampa Bay’s projected preseason rotation that are still […]

Ryan Zimmerman’s broken thumb helps delay a tough decision

During Saturday night’s Nationals-Braves game, Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman broke his thumb on a pickoff play at second base. He’ll be out four to six weeks, and while the injury is a tough loss for the Nationals, it may end up helping them delay a decision that appears to be inevitable. Last week, Washington […]

The El Paso Chihuahuas pulled off an unreal prank on Jeff Francoeur

MLB veteran Jeff Francoeur is now a member of the Padres AAA affiliate, the El Paso Chihuahuas. Francoeur’s El Paso teammates decided to concoct an elaborate prank, creating the illusion that teammate Jorge Reyes was deaf. Of course, Franceour bought into the prank hook, line, and sinker, and believed Reyes was deaf for an entire month before the big reveal. This is just hilarious stuff, and the pranking bar has been raise to another level.

Dugout Digest – dominance

I don’t make much of regular season matchups between two teams, but the Braves simply own the Nationals. Atlanta is 4-1 against Washington this year, handing the Nationals all four of their losses so far in the 2014 campaign. Last season, the Braves spanked their divisional rivals 13-6 during the regular season en route to […]

Jim Thome’s first pitch on Friday night was horrible

The Charlotte Knights (White Sox AAA) invited Jim Thome to throw out the first pitch on Friday night, and the results were awful. I’m sorry Jim. I have so much respect for everything you’ve done in your career, but this throw is…well, it’s really terrible. I guess that’s why Thome moved off of third base so early in his career.

Curtis Granderson gets into confrontation with Angels fan

During last night’s Mets-Angels game at Angel Stadium, a fan grabbed the jersey of Mets right fielder Curtis Granderson during the eighth inning after a fly out by J.B. Shuck. Granderson and the fan proceeded to get into an argument complete with pointing and gesturing before the fan was presumably removed from the park. Not a good look, random Angels fan.

Dugout Digest – a very Mets walk off

When the Mets are involved in a walk off win, chances are that it won’t be normal. Last Saturday, Ike Davis hit a grand slam to push New York past the Reds. Last night, Jeurys Familia had a chance to allow the same walk off to Hank Conger – but instead, he surpassed all of […]

Madison Bumgarner helps his own cause with grand slam

We’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff already this season, but I’m not sure if there was anything more unlikely than this grand slam by Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner. The slam off of Jorge de la Rosa turned a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead, and gave San Francisco’s ace some breathing room after early struggles put a damper on his evening.

The longest homers for the week ending April 10th

We kicked off this whole “longest homers of the week” thing last week, and it got pretty good reviews. This week, the cycle continues on. Here are the longest homers for the week from April 4th to April 10th. 1. Giancarlo Stanton vs Eric Stults, 484 feet (April 4th). People said a lot of mean […]

Pittsburgh wants to be like Cutch in new ad

You know how you know you’ve made it, especially in a blue collar town like Pittsburgh? When MLB puts together a commercial starring you and your signature hair style. Andrew McCutchen’s trademark dreadlocks were the star of this ad, which featured various Pittsburgh residents (including Mayor Bill Peduto) walking around with dreadlocks and Pirates caps.

Congratulations to the 2013 NL MVP – you’re finally making baseball relevant in a city dominated by football and hockey over the last 20 years.

Ryan Howard thinks that the Phillies have played well this year

“In all actuality we’ve actually played very well this year. I disagree with everybody else. Our record doesn’t necessarily reflect that right now, but, you know, we’ve played well. We had three real bad games. So the only thing to do is go out there and try to win again.”
