Dugout Digest – an uninspiring day

This was the first day of the 2014 season that really ended up being, for lack of a better word, crappy. Of the nine games on the schedule, two were rainouts and three were decided by five or more runs. So, we had four close-ish games, and two of those only became close because of […]

Omar Infante hit in face by Heath Bell pitch

In the seventh inning of Kansas City’s 4-2 win over Tampa Bay on Monday night at Kauffman Stadium, Royals second baseman Omar Infante was hit in the face by a pitch from Rays reliever Heath Bell. Infante immediately went down in a heap before popping up and getting helped off the field by Royals trainers with a towel covering his face. There’s no immediate word on Infante’s condition, but we obviously wish him the best and hope that he wasn’t serious injured.

This week in replay reviews (April 7th edition)

Instant replay is taking a hold of MLB this season, and there is some controversy on both sides about the new regulations. Some feel that baseball is losing its purity with the institution of replay reviews, while others feel that the changes came nowhere near soon enough. Here at TOC, we fall into the latter […]

Dugout Digest – Yu’s back

Yu Darvish made his highly-anticipated season debut on Sunday for the Rangers, and the Cy Young contender looked pretty similar to his old self in Texas’ 3-0 win over the Rays. His fastball sat at 93 and topped out at 96 – just like it usually does. He generated seven whiffs on just 89 pitches. […]

Dugout Digest – the struggling Diamondbacks

It’s obviously still early in the 2014 season. After all, we haven’t even finished one full weekend of play. But if you’re a Diamondbacks fan, you’re probably just a little concerned about your team. The club is 1-7 through eight games, and their one win was a one run victory over the Giants. In their […]

Charlie Blackmon’s six hit day was helped by Mark Trumbo

In the latest edition of The Misadventures of Mark Trumbo, Mark helps Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon collect his fourth hit of the day after this embarrassing sliding attempt on a sinking liner. The hit would end up being a double for Blackmon.

It’s OK, though – Trumbo’s solo homer in the fifth was one of the lone highlights for the Diamondbacks in this 12-2 thumping by the Rockies. However, in seven games and 62 innings in left field so far this season, Trumbo was racked up -3 DRS – only White Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia has a lower total.

Dugout Digest – Tanaka lands

Masahiro Tanaka made his MLB debut on Friday night, and despite some early struggles, the results were impressive. Tanaka allowed three runs before even getting the fifth out of the game against the Blue Jays, but after Jonathan Diaz’s two-run single, Tanaka allowed just two more baserunners over the rest of his seven inning outing […]

Mariners-Athletics game postponed because the infield was a mess

This is quite an embarrassing situation for the Oakland Athletics. Despite clear skies, Friday night’s game with the Seattle Mariners at O.co Coliseum was postponed because the infield wasn’t covered with a tarp overnight during heavy rains, and it wasn’t in playable condition. Seriously. What an unbelievable mess. This is high school stuff. The A’s […]

Fan catches foul ball in bucket of popcorn

Here’s the most ridiculous thing you’ll see on this Friday night. A fan at the Cardinals-Pirates game caught a foul pop-up….in his bucket of popcorn. We’ve seen gloves, beer cups, hats, fishing nets…but a popcorn bucket? I don’t think so.

The longest homers for the week ending April 3rd

Everyone loves long, monstrous home runs. So here at TOC, we decided that every Friday, we’re going to highlight the five longest homers from the week that was. Given that the season is only a few days old, the list of bombs this week is going to be a little lacking. But trust us – […]
