Add another young arm to the list of those claimed by Tommy John surgery — Tampa Bay’s Matt Moore confirmed Monday night that he’ll be going under the knife to repair his partially torn UCL. Moore tried to throw Monday afternoon, and while the ligament isn’t completely torn, it was pretty clear he couldn’t continue […]

The pre-arbitration extensions for young stars keep on coming. The latest young player to opt for security over maximized earnings: San Diego second baseman Jedd Gyorko. Gyorko’s deal is for 6 years and will pay him $35 million, with a $13 million option for a 7th year. The deal starts this year, covers what would […]

Bernie Brewer, Hank the Dog and the Racing Sausages are all prominently featured, of course. But video is a potential .gif goldmine with Brandon Kinztler doing the worm, Logan Schafer dancing on the catwalk of Miller Park’s roof and Bob Uecker playing a trumpet.

Shoulder issues have plagued Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman for the last couple years, and it appears they’ve returned. Zimmerman left Washington’s game Saturday with shoulder soreness, and was out of the starting lineup on Sunday after undergoing an MRI. The results of the test showed no structural damage, meaning Zimmerman will likely avoid a […]

Over the past two seasons, Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos has had some of the worst injury luck in baseball. It looks like that unlucky streak will stretch into a third season. The Washington Post says that Ramos likely needs hamate bone surgery on his left hand, and could miss four to eight weeks as a […]

The Arizona Diamondbacks seem to be making it their mission to be the most-disliked team in the NL West. After last year’s season-long feud with the Los Angeles Dodgers, it appears Arizona is turning their attention to another division rival.

Jose Reyes made it 10 games last season before getting hurt. This year, he made it one at-bat. Reyes led off the game for the Jays against Tampa Bay, and was robbed of a hit on a tailing liner on a diving catch by Desmond Jennings. He jogged off the field looking like everything was […]

Jackie Bradley Jr. lost his spring training competition with Grady Sizemore for Boston’s centerfielder job, but it turns out he’ll still find himself on the Opening Day roster. Bradley takes the place of Shane Victorino, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list just before today’s opener against Baltimore. Victorino, who played in just 122 […]

A lot of people weren’t happy when Jhonny Peralta was allowed to return from his 50-game Biogenesis suspension to play in the postseason. Peralta served his time, then proceeded to hit .333/.353/.545 in the postseason and cash in on the free agent market with a four-year contract. Under new penalties announced by MLB and the […]

Patrick Corbin’s start on March 15 was supposed to be his last spring outing before heading to Australia for Arizona’s season-opening series against the Dodgers. It turned out to be his last start for at least a year. Corbin left that game against the Indians in the middle of an at-bat during the 7th inning, […]

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks took off for Australia last night, embarking on a 15-hour flight across the Pacific Ocean. Once they get over the jet lag, they’ll be playing the series at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground. Obviously, a lot of work goes into turning a cricket pitch into a baseball diamond. Just take a look at this time lapse of the project, taking place over 16 days:
Other than foul territory that makes the Coliseum in Oakland seem small, the dimensions will be fairly normal — walls are set at 328 feet down the lines and 400 feet to dead center. With sellouts expected, 45,000 Aussies will be packing the stands for the first Major League Baseball game there in 100 years. Sydney is the fourth international city to host a season-opening series, joining Monterrey, San Juan and Tokyo.
If you’re looking to get up early on Saturday, first pitch for Game 1 is at 4 a.m. Eastern time. Game 2 starts Saturday night at 10 p.m. Eastern time.

With a team as well-rounded as the Cardinals, it’s actually a bit of a challenge to pick out just four guys who will have a significant impact on the 2014 season. Sure, there are MVP and Cy Young candidates, but there’s also established veterans playing important roles and a new wave of talent that’s starting […]

While everyone expects the Cardinals to have a playoff spot pretty much locked in, there are still a few questions that are left to be answered. For some teams, the questions asked here are big ones, involving things that may make or break a season. For St. Louis, these are more “hey, wouldn’t it be […]

The Cardinals don’t make this easy on us. Heading into the offseason, they had two pretty clear weaknesses — outfield defense and shortstop offense. They traded for Peter Bourjos and signed Jhonny Peralta. Problems solved. And now we have to try to nitpick two other weaknesses for an impressively complete club. How about their struggles […]
