Manny Ramirez joining Iowa Cubs as player/coach

No, that’s not a headline from The Onion. Manny Ramirez is back in organized baseball. The Cubs announced Sunday morning that they’re signing the 41-year-old to be a player/coach at Triple-A Iowa. The emphasis seems to be heavily on the “coach” aspect, as Theo Epstein was very clear that we won’t be seeing Manny trying […]

Tony La Russa Diamondbacks

Is La Russa the beginning of the end for Towers, Gibson?

Publicly, Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick said a few weeks ago that he was going to give general manager Kevin Towers every chance to succeed. Those comments were made after another April loss, dropping the Diamondbacks to a league-worst 5-17 record. As it turns out, shortly after those comments, Kendrick and team president Derrick Hall […]

Prince Fielder

Should the Rangers sit Prince Fielder more?

Generously listed at 5’11” and 275 pounds, Prince Fielder has never looked like the most durable guy. Despite that, nobody has played in more games since 2006 than him. Fielder’s latest streak — 546 consecutive games played — came to an end Saturday night, when the Rangers held him out of the lineup with a […]

Carlos Gomez pink goatee

Carlos Gomez dyed his goatee pink for Mother’s Day

Most players wear pink gear on Mother’s Day in support of breast cancer awareness. Apparently the armbands, cleats and bats weren’t enough for Carlos Gomez, though — the Milwaukee centerfielder went above and beyond by dying his goatee pink for Sunday’s game against the Yankees. The before-and-after photo, from Gomez’s Instagram account: Gomez reached base […]

Jesse Chavez flashes quick reflexes on comebacker

If Jesse Chavez was a split second slower or Michael Saunders’ line drive was hit a hair differently, this could have been a scary moment. Instead, it’s an incredible defensive play.

In the 4th inning of Monday night’s game in Oakland, Saunders hit a screamer right at Chavez on the mound. Luckily, Chavez was able to get his glove up in time — not only was he able to save himself from getting hit in the head, but he made the catch to end the inning. Chavez was knocked to the ground on the play, and after the initial shock wore off, he picked himself up and walked off, visibly letting out a sigh of relief.

Chavez continued to pitch into the 6th inning, but left the game with Oakland trailing, 4-3. The slender right-hander has been one of the bigger surprises in the American League to this point — even after surrendering 4 runs on 7 hits to the Mariners Tuesday night, Chavez is carrying a 2.47 ERA and has struck out 44 batters in 43.2 innings, walking just 10.

Pirates win on first-ever walkoff challenge

We have another instant replay First — the Pittsburgh Pirates are the first team to win a game directly as a result of challenging a play on the field. Starling Marte hit a two-out triple in the bottom of the 9th, and tried to score when Ehire Adrianza threw the ball away. After initially being called out at home, replay showed that Buster Posey wasn’t able to make contact on the swipe tag until after Marte’s hand hit home (in a fun twist, if it weren’t for another new rule — the one nicknamed after him — Posey could have blocked the plate and possibly sent the game into extras).

While a delayed walkoff celebration isn’t as fun as an instant one, at least game-changing calls are being corrected. And I’m sure the Pirates would much rather wait a few minutes to celebrate than get a repeat of the infamous Jerry Meals call.

Suspensions handed out for Brewers-Pirates brawl

Suspensions for Sunday’s Steel City skirmish already appealing, according to Fox’s Jon Morosi. That much was probably safe to assume, given Gomez’s comments immediately following the game on Sunday. Maldonado, who knew a suspension was coming, will not appeal and will start serving his suspension tonight against San Diego. The Maldonado suspension may end up […]

Chris Sale

Chris Sale lands on DL after throwing 127 pitches

Five days after throwing 127 pitches in 7 innings against Boston, Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale is on the disabled list. The White Sox announced Monday night that Sale would be scratched from his scheduled start today. Shortly after, they placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a strained flexor muscle in his […]

Hank the Dog

Miller Park is installing a doghouse for Hank

Are you tired of Hank the Dog stories yet? No? Lucky you! The Brewers enter Monday with the best record in baseball, but who cares about their best start since 1987 when Hank is getting his own adorable little doghouse installed at Miller Park? His new digs while he’s in residence at the stadium will […]

Brewers and Pirates continue to go at it in post-game comments

Carlos Gomez:

“I’m not apologizing for nothing I did today. I do the stuff I’ve been doing for eight years. Why do people get mad and pissed off for something I do every time? And when they do it nobody get mad, nobody get pissed off? I don’t understand.”

“(Jose) Tabata hit a double, pimped it, we don’t do nothing. (Andrew) McCutchen do it yesterday. Russell Martin did it. We didn’t do nothing. We respect that – ‘You win, OK, enjoy it.’ We hit a double, we hit a triple, they get mad. I don’t think it’s fair.”

“I get to third base and somebody’s screaming at me – ‘It’s not your job.’ But everything’s over and Snider comes real angry and talks to me that way, so I responded back, he tried to punch me and everything started there. I don’t know why they’re mad for something like that.”

“When they strike me out, I no say nothing. I walk to the dugout with my mouth shut and I don’t say nothing. They get hit, they’re screaming, I don’t think it’s fair. You want to do something? Strike me out and enjoy it. I’m not going to be pissed off for you to strike me out. I’ve struck out a lot of times and nothing’s happened.”

Gerrit Cole:

“I said, ‘If you’re going to hit a home run, you can watch it. If you’re going to hit a fly ball to center field, don’t watch it. I didn’t curse at him, I didn’t try to provoke a fight. I was frustrated and I let my emotions get the better of me and I ended up getting one of my teammates hurt.”

Martin Maldonado:

“I saw Snider and Martin over Gomez. I could tell it wasn’t fair, so I had to protect my teammate. I don’t worry about (a suspension). That’s part of baseball. Whatever happens.”

Russell Martin:

“The fair thing would be to have our team hold down Maldonado so that Travis can go back and sucker-punch him right in the face. That would be the fair thing to do. I don’t know if we ask the Brewers if they’re going to be down for that.”

Brewers, Pirates trade blows in Easter brawl

The Brewers and Pirates don’t like eachother. This is nothing new — the two sides have had their fair share of fights in the past. The latest incident came this afternoon, when Carlos Gomez stared at what he thought was a home run and flipped his bat for what ended up being a triple off the wall. Gerrit Cole took exception, and Gomez — who has a history of not taking pitcher confrontation well — started jawing back. The benches cleared in a hurry, with Travis Snider taking Gomez down before getting blasted with a closed fist from Martin Maldonado and getting taken down by Rickie Weeks. Gomez, Snider and Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron were ejected. Cole remained in the game.

Jose Valverde

Mets make another closer change

We’re only through three weeks of the season, and the New York Mets are already on their third closer of the year. After yet another meltdown from Jose Valverde Saturday night, the Mets

Sean Doolittle

Oakland gives Sean Doolittle five-year extension

Most teams don’t sign relievers to five-year extensions. The Oakland A’s are not most teams. While their closer situation is still in flux, the A’s are locking up one of the relievers looking to replace Jim Johnson in the 9th inning. Oakland inked lefty Sean Doolittle to an extension

Martin Maldonado actually hits the cover off the ball

Announcers like to say that guys “hit the cover off the ball” all the time, but how often is that literally what happened? Brewers backup catcher Martin Maldonado did just that against Charlie Morton and the Pirates. While he didn’t exactly hit it hard — he pounded it into the ground — the ball fell apart as it reached poor Pedro Alvarez, who had to try to throw a ball that was in pieces. Maldonado reached first safely on what was ruled an infield hit, because you can’t charge an error to Rawlings in the box score.

Yankees turn triple play on Tampa Bay

Yangervis Solarte helped bail CC Sabathia out of trouble in the 2nd inning of New York’s game against the Rays tonight, starting off a classic around-the-horn triple play. As it turns out, Sabathia is no stranger to triple plays while he’s on the mound:
