The Twins adopted the position of President of Baseball Operations after restructuring the front office in mid-July. Owner Jim Pohlad reportedly had disagreements with general manager Terry Ryan about the way to improve the Twins roster, which led to Ryan getting axed after five seasons with the club. Assistant general manager Rob Antony took over as GM on an interim basis.
Anthopoulos is a logical fit for the role. He left the Toronto Blue Jays on a high note in 2015, turning Canada’s team to contenders with shrewd trades for Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki, and David Price. After a rumored power struggle with president Mark Shapiro and diminished organizational pull, Anthopoulos shockingly left the Blue Jays, despite winning Sporting News Executive of the Year. In January, he joined Andrew Friedman’s analytics-based management squad in Los Angeles as vice-president of baseball operations.
The Dodgers job seemed like a placeholder for Anthopoulos until he was ready to join another organization in a larger capacity. The 39-year-old is one of the brightest minds in the game and has tangible experience as GM and executive vice president. He’d be an excellent fit with Minnesota and represent a stark change in direction for the organization.
