Francona, who’s twice suffered serious heart-related health issues, suffered chest pains on Tuesday after his heart rate jumped to more than 100 beats per minute, according to the Associated Press. After getting his heart checked and undergoing an EKG, Francona was given a precautionary day off.
It’s scary to see Francona suffer any health related issues again, but thankfully, he wasn’t hospitalized for the incident. The Indians skipper was happy to see messages ribbing him about his health, admitting to the AP he was embarrassed by the whole ordeal.
”I probably had more messages that were not complimentary than were,” Francona said with a laugh. ”I was more embarrassed. If guys started worrying – treating me like that – I’d have been scared. Because if anybody deserves it it’s probably me.”
There’s no need for Francona to embarrassed. His team cares about him greatly and just wants to make sure his health is OK. They’re going to worry about him if he’s not in the clubhouse. As somebody who’s dealt with heart problems my entire life, I get Francona’s attitude. He doesn’t want to be the center of attention and just wants his everyday routine to continue. It’s hard to blame him.
Francona’s health is seemingly on the mend, as he’s back behind the Indians bench. Let’s hope his health doesn’t cause him to miss any more games.
