Mike Scioscia is backing superstar Mike Trout as AL MVP. That might not seem noteworthy, but the comments reverse the Los Angeles Angels managers previous thoughts on qualifications for the award.
Back in August, Scioscia said “there needs to be value on how you’ve affected a team’s performance.” Interesting comments considering Scioscia has the American League’s best player on his struggling team. Now, the Angels skipper has changed his tune, saying he believes Trout should be MVP despite Los Angeles being 14 games under .500 (73-87).
“What Mike does and what Mike has accomplished this year has more impact than the fact that we’re a sub-.500 team,” Scioscia told Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times. “His numbers are incredible. You can’t deny that they’re a notch above anybody else that’s there.”
Trout is having an MVP-worthy season, with a .316 average 29 home runs, 99 RBI, 29 stolen bases and a career-high 123 runs scored, 114 walks and .440 OBP. That’s without getting into Trout’s elite defensive play. Trout setting career-highs in multiple categories defines how great he’s been for the Angels during a largely dreary season.
Further helping Trout’s candidacy is the lack of a clear-cut second place candidate. Josh Donaldson is the closest player to represent a challenge, especially, if expected, the Blue Jays qualify for the playoffs. Mookie Betts, Manny Machado, and Jose Altuve also are strong candidates.
Despite making his debut in 2011, it’s surprising Trout has only captured AL MVP honors once in his career. He’s been the best player in MLB in 2016 and regardless of the Angels mediocre record, Scioscia’s correct, Trout deserves the MVP Trophy. Scioscia’s flip-flopping is allowed in this case. Trout is the best in the AL.
