Report: Recently released Jonathan Papelbon would welcome return to Boston

Jonathan Papelbon would welcome a return to his big league roots.

Papelbon, who was a member of the Boston Red Sox between 2005-11, was released by the Washington Nationals on Saturday. The former closer lost his job to newly acquired Mark Melancon and subsequently requested his release from Washington. Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports Papelbon is now interested in returning to the Red Sox.

The 35-year-old former all-star has struggled badly with the Nationals in 2016 with 19 saves, a 4.37 ERA, a 1.457 WHIP and a career-high 9.5 hits against per nine innings. The Red Sox bullpen hasn’t been a major weakness for the club this season, but the group could use some help. Boston’s bullpen currently rank 18th in MLB with a 3.93 ERA.

The biggest question is would Boston bring back Papelbon? There are multiple red flags from his stint in Washington. Papelbon was short-tempered and entitled – infamously choking out Nationals star Bryce Harper. Signing him would be a huge gamble.

Manager John Farrell told the Boston Herald the club hasn’t had talks yet about the new free agent.

“We haven’t had any discussion on Jonathan Papelbon,” Farrell said. “Yeah, we know he’s a free agent. We know he’s out there. … With any person or any player that’s available we’ll certainly talk about it but that’s yet to (happen).”

Papelbon might welcome a return to Boston, but I’m not sure the feeling is mutual. He’s a wild card who’s in the midst of a career-worst season. The Red Sox could use the help, but not at the cost of screwing with club chemistry. Papelbon might have to find a job elsewhere.
