Darryl Strawberry worried for Dwight Gooden’s life after canceled event appearance

Darryl Strawberry is concerned about former teammate Dwight Gooden’s life.

According to the New York Daily News, Gooden was a no-show for a scheduled appearance on WFAN. Gooden’s representatives told Strawberry he would be late for the event and eventually said he wasn’t coming at all. Gooden also canceled Friday’s appearance at FanFest.

Gooden’s absence is a big concern, as the former New York Mets pitcher has a long-time substance abuse problem. Strawberry, who’s dealt with substance abuse and alcohol issues of his own, admitted to worrying about Gooden’s life.

“It’s really, really, really tough to sit here and just know that he was supposed to be here, too, and he’s not here. It’s really tough. And I think a lot of times people just keep thinking it’s all right, and it’s not all right. My fear is that — and I know addiction — and my fear is people that don’t change, they die. They die this way. I just hope the light comes on soon before it’s too late.”

I can’t imagine how it must feel not knowing the status of someone with substance abuse issues. When you don’t hear from them, thinking the worst isn’t an overreaction.

Gooden told Jim Baumbach of Newsday Sports, he’s well and hasn’t read Strawberry’s comments.

It’s a cause for concern that Gooden canceled his appearances at WFAN and FanFest. Hopefully, like he relayed to Baumbach, he’s doing fine and just didn’t feel comfortable being in public. But, considering Gooden’s history with substance abuse, he could be going through a tough time.
