Cubs bafflingly play ‘Smack My Bi*** Up’ after Chapman closes out inning

The Chicago Cubs made a very disappointing music choice on Sunday night.

Sarah Spain of ESPN.com reports the Cubs played The Prodigy’s 1997 hit ‘Smack My Bitch Up” after Aroldis Chapman closed out an inning during Chicago’s 6-4 loss against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Why is the music choice disappointing? Because Chapman was involved in a domestic violence incident in December, after he was accused of choking his girlfriend. The Cubs closer received a 30 game suspension from the league for his alleged actions. Playing a song called “Smack My Bitch Up” immediately after a player, who’s been accused of domestic violence, takes the mound is inappropriate. In fact, playing the song at all is questionable.

I’d be hard pressed to believe Chapman wanted the Cubs to play the song, knowing it would put him in an uncomfortable spot. He can’t be thrilled with the song choice. It’s a fireable offense for whoever played it.

Next time, the Cubs should stick to bubblegum pop tunes, rock classics or something more appropriate.  “Smack My Bitch Up” should never have been in the rotation on its name alone. I’d wager after tonight, you won’t hear the song at Wrigley Field ever again – which is good because it shouldn’t have played in the first place.
